Pixen for Pixel Art on OS X

by Joshua "RegularX" Birk · in Torque Game Builder · 04/07/2005 (4:40 pm) · 6 replies

I just stumbled on this today:

http://www.opensword.org/Pixen/

It's a 2D pixel-based paint program for Mac OSX designed specifically for generating that more "old school" style of art :) It's a fairly short learning curve and is one of this "WYSIWYN" (What You See is What You Need) type designs.

Highly recommend to the fellow noob artist, or even possibly the more pro.

Thanks for reminding me about this :)

I tried this awhile ago while it was still in it's very earliest stages and was quite slow to work with (on a G4 933).

I'm going to give it another shot, as I'm sure it has matured quite a bit.

Thanks
Chris

I'll have to recommend Pro Motion 5.1 Pro edition.

If your looking for the cheapest tool available and are running Windows you could try GraphicsGale Free Edition. I've messed with it a bit, and suits my needs rather well.

Ooo... animation and onion skin, scanning capabilities, layers, AVI support, print multiple frames on a single page, thumbnail browsing (showing animations in motion), batch conversion, palette switching, color uniforming across several files... not bad for $20!

Not bad at all, if you mean Gale. And to be honest the free version has just about everything you need for T2d. Since the things left out for the pro version are things like gif, .ico and cursor stuff.

I will still buy it though. It's worth it.

Yes, I meant Gale. And you're right! I didn't realize that they only charged for GIF/cursor support. That's crazy. They even support AVI in the free version. Just not GIF. I'd feel bad not paying for this if it ended up being a needed tool in my development process though.

Edit: I just downloaded it. Whoa! It's all in Japanese. Yikes! I'm a bit rusty in that area. And it looks like it has quite a few options. I wonder if it has a language file I could edit...

Or maybe it just runs in Japanese because I have that as the default setting for programs that don't have Unicode...

Update: Yeah, it was my "non-Unicode" language setting. Which is BS because this program uses Unicode... It just detects that setting to determine which language to run in. This sucks because I need that setting to be Japanese for other programs. Ah well. This program seems worth the effort of changing that option every once in a while. Too bad that option requires a reboot.

Update 2: Ok, I actually emailed the author of the program about this, and he gave me a helpful reply. If any of you have the same problem as me, you can force it into English mode by using the "/english" option in the command line. Example:

C:\Program Files\GraphicsGale\Gale.exe /english
