Building a Tasteless game: Would GG Scrub It?

by Brian Wells · in General Discussion · 12/27/2001 (4:57 pm) · 3 replies

If a game were to incorperate some features which are not exacly "PC" (oh hell let's tell the truth, it may offend a lot of people) is this something that GG would not allow us to distribute? I know GG has first crack at what we develop for publishing, but would they prevent us from publishing because they do not nessicarily like what we produce? I think i would ask this question now only because I do not want to find out after we finish producing about 50% of the content that it is not an option.

I believe that it is a game a lot of people would want to play, if nothing else for shock and drunken fun value alone (don't tell me you guys don't have drunken lan parties over there...)

If one of the GG guys can let me know what they think i would appreciate it.

Thanks.

I'm not sure they can stop you from publishing anything. I'll have to check the user agreement, but I'm pretty sure the publishing thing was a percentage based on "if" you went with a publisher, not how you went about getting one.

Truth is, tho, I don't think many publishers would be rough and ready to put out a totally offensive game...depending on content. If it's just gross, violent and features lots of boobs, I don't see a major problem. On the other hand, if you include racism, I think you're looking at a showstopper.

We don't just get first crack at what you publish. You are required to publish your game through GG. However, we will not publish just anything. We are going to hide behind the ESRB ratings, and not publish anything that would require a rating of the equivalent of NC17. I'll have to check on the exact name of the rating.

If your game was a movie, we would allow an R rating, but not X or NC-17.

I think your best bet would be to send the GG guys what you have in mind (settings, some of the gameplay type ideas...) and then get a more detailed information on the ratings system. Although I tend to disagree with many of the ratings that games seem to hold, I guess its a good thing for parents, even if little Jimmyboy wants and gets it anyway. :)
