Lack of documentation ?

by Samuel Nova · in Torque Game Builder · 04/04/2005 (2:31 am) · 9 replies

Hi there,

I bought T2D last Friday and spent too little timer over the weekend with it. First thing I did was to print all the documentation such as:

T2D Basic Tutorial.pdf
T2D Informal Technical Overview.pdf
T2D Reference.pdf
TileEditor.pdf

GREAT stuff I have to admit.

I went on to check out http://www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=28302

All very impressive, but I got one thing to complain a bit about, well, more a request.
What about documentation about the script language itself, such as:
Variables (Strings, ints, floats..), Arrays, Syntax (for, while, function), commands, functions (parameters, return values)... and so forth.

And what about sound, joystick, network....

Right now the documentation is ONLY T2D related...

Please don't say, look at the TGE documentation because I don't have a TGE license, nor should it be required.

I got to admit that maybe I missed this documentation on the web site, if that's the case, then slap me and tell me the URL :-)

Please let me know if you got plans for this kind of documentation (Later EA versions?)

Cheers,

Sam Nova

Sound is not too tricky, and has been covered briefly on the forums.

Joysticks I don't know about, but I know there are resources relating to TGE and Joysticks, so I'd suspect you could find something relevant there.

Networking is not really in T2D yet. There is some stuff, but it's unsupported at the moment. Proper networking will come in a future release.

If you look through the forums you will see that many people have asked for more documentation and/or demos to look at. It's on the way, you'll need to be either patient and wait for it or adventurous and try to figure it out.

Philip: Sure, I can spent some time looking over the forum, but I mean, this kind of documentation should come with T2D I would say. We can't expect people to search the forums for every thing :)

Matthew: Thanks alot for the URL. This is what comes with TGE, so why not T2D :) I will check the documentation out.

Thanks to you both for SUCH quick replies.

"The TorqueScript Language" section covers a lot of Torquescript generalities...

Your request is understood :) They plan on updating this a lot... in fact Ben Garney is working on "Torque Developers Network" to help remedy the doc issue.

... and please don't forget that this is EA which means that it is a little raw as it's not a finished product. This is not an excuse, it's the real status of T2D. Although T2D is very powerful at this point in time, it is more of a look/see than a product you'd expect packaged with lots of glossy documents/tutorials.

It would take me a very long time to format the old TGE docs to a format that's totally applicable to T2D. As a single person with a day-job, that isn't going to happen.

On the bright side, there's work progressing on the Torque Developer Network which will be similar to the Unreal Developer Network which should address this issue of there being a common ground between the products, e.g. the underlying TGE platform. People who have purchased TGE related developer products will get access to this and won't rely on you having a TGE license.

Lots and lots of stuff is on its way. In the meantime, there's a great community that can help you get past any sticking points so you can get on with writing games.

Good Luck,

- Melv.

Thanks again guys.

I didnt want to complain (even though I used that word in the first post)

Maybe add the script URL to the http://www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=28302 (I can't get the URL code working). In this case less people would be asking the same questions as I did.

Melv: Yup, I'm aware of EA and that you are a VERY busy person. So maybe one day we will have full documentation, until then, forum and the links above will have to do (and I'm pretty sure it is enough). Sounds interesting regarding t he TDN, will keep an eye on that. Melv, dont know if you rememebered, we emailed a bit last year, one email you said "TGE can do some amazing stuff and with T2D, lots of people will be doing so" Guess this is happening now :)

Don't forget we are in a Early Adopter mode. I think the staff is well aware there is a .nfo problem.
They have some big dev network project thingy in the works anyway.
