Quake 2 and .Plans

I have two questions for the GG community. In case some of you missed it, the Quake 2 source code was released today by John Carmack at id Software... so I downloaded it but I am not sure how to compile it in VC++ 6 so has anybody done this yet?
My second question is about .plans. How can you create a real .plan system that is able to be fingered and such? Thanks!

My question was more towards creating .plans on a company web site. Not using the GarageGames system so that they can finger the Silverlime Studios site. Thanks anyways. Do you know how to set this up? I.E., is their some PHP or CGI code that generates .plans?

If you go to the flipcode link on the bottom left of this page you will find it listed there.

as for the .plan system thing, i could write one in ASP really easily, but it'd have to run on a Windows server with database support

Cya.

Well, my server runs Unix but it has *everything* else. Darn, can anyone write one for it. If you need the specs, ImageLinkUSA.Cya.

Chances are good your admin has turned off fingering capability though, and if not, your system isn't as secure as you think it is.

A .plan file is just that. Assuming your main server is *nix, you simply create a text file in your home directory and name it .planChances are good your admin has turned off fingering capability though, and if not, your system isn't as secure as you think it is.

but who'd choose the quake 2 engine over the torque engine? theres no competition at all.

on the wavelength forums someone posted all the problems there were when he just compiled it normally with changing any code, wow it was sooooo long id could of have lest fixed it instead of deleting all the stuff they didnt want people to have.but who'd choose the quake 2 engine over the torque engine? theres no competition at all.

it's not a matter of anyone trying to choose q2 over torque, torque is without question superior
its a matter of being able to choose q2 "also"
quake 2 rocked in its day and with new "minds" inputing into the q2 engine it will more then likely rock on.
(i think thats basicly what id is hoping, and me too for that matter)

quake 2 has had ALOT of games made from it, which in my mind makes it superior, so far. until torque games line the virtual shelves here at garage games, then we'll see...i can't wait until the day arrives...
what the quake 2 source does is provide a very excellent base to use to learn and possibly gain insight on your own programming...plus just being able to peek in on carmack's code is worth it ;}

until i see games made with torque (don't even get me started about tribes), i'm not gonna say that it's superior. quake 2 has had ALOT of games made from it, which in my mind makes it superior, so far. until torque games line the virtual shelves here at garage games, then we'll see...i can't wait until the day arrives...

Moral: Quality, not quantity.

it's quality not quantity...Quake 2 was good in its day but now with the more modern engines, it's really showing its age. Torque is definitely better quality than Quake 2...compare graphics and everything else and Quake 2 is no comparison. One of the things I love most about the Torque engine is its endless landscapes...hopefully all these engines will catch on and the days of little maps in confined spaces will be gone. Also keep in mind how "old" the Quake 2 engine is...Quake 2 was released in December 1997...that's 4 years ago. A lot happens and changes in 4 years in the computer industry. Think about it, those days we had to use 3Dfx Voodoo cards for 3D accelleration (I got Voodoo1 and Quake 2 for Christmas 4 years ago, in fact :)). Now 3Dfx is belly up and we have ultra fast Radeons and GeForce 3's...and we're playing games like Unreal Tournament and Tribes 2. Half-Life was and still is the biggest game (best FPS ever, IMO) that used the Quake 2 engine...that was released in November 1998. So come back a year from now and see how many games have been made with the Torque engine. I think you might be surprised.Moral: Quality, not quantity.

However, torque is way advanced in terms of graphics compared to Quake2, and from what I can tell has a much more powerful scripting engine. Really depends what your game is and how much programming ability your team has, I'd guess.

Though I have to say, I like the Quake2 engine better than the Quake3 engine. ;) Whooo go Half-Life!However, torque is way advanced in terms of graphics compared to Quake2, and from what I can tell has a much more powerful scripting engine. Also think about that it would be real hard to do a huge indoor world with many walls like quake worlds are in tribes 2 because of the rendering of terrian, though i could be wrong.

actully I'm 99% sure HL was created with quake 2, not quake 1.Also think about that it would be real hard to do a huge indoor world with many walls like quake worlds are in tribes 2 because of the rendering of terrian, though i could be wrong.

It was Quake 2. I'm 100% sure.

Didn't HalfLife dev start on Q1 engine, and then when Q2 was released, they moved it over to Q2? I seem to recall Q1-ish graphics in the early footage shown at a lan party in mid - 1998 (Fragapalooza 98). Maybe Im wrong.

When you submit the plan, check the "Available to the public" box if you want it to be fingerable.
