Online project management software?

I'm in the early stages of planning a game with several members of a forum, and I believe the flat thread discussion format has become too restrictive.
Has anyone else been through a similar experience? How did you resolve the problem? Do you have any hints or tips for choosing replacement or complimentary software?
I would prefer that the software can be installed on my own site, rather than being remotely hosted.

There was a recommendation by Jarrod Roberson (iTeamwork) discussed in this thread.

For example, some forum software includes most of the features available in groupware and project management tools, as do some portals and content management systems.
If possible, I'd like areas where public and private discussions can take place, so that potential customers can offer suggestions but some development decisions are still kept behind the scenes.
Currently we're using Invision Power Board 1.2, which includes features such as a calendar, file uploads, moderation queue, warning system, suspension, ban controls, permission masks and multi-user groups. Unfortunately, the flat thread system can make discussions hard to follow if people become side-tracked, and threaded discussions are only available in version 2.0 and above which is no longer free.

I think I need a little advice on what type of software is likely to help before I can decide on a specific product. For example, some forum software includes most of the features available in groupware and project management tools, as do some portals and content management systems.

We use jspWiki and Atlassian Jira. jspWiki is free, and Jira beats the crap out of most free task/bugtrackers but isnt free

- Geeklog
- Intergrated Forum
- Intergrated Mantis BugTracker
(optional)- Intergrated Gallery Pluging.
I've used this setup and it works wonders as you have a group system, intergrated plugins (as above), custom themes, etc..
check it on www.gdsleeds.com

Geeklog is just a blog though isn't it? How would that be an improvement on IPB with a news forum?

As much as geeklog is a blog, since you have groups you can allow access to certain people, therefore keep pages totally private from the rest of the world. You can edit and maintain pages on the fly, with only a controled amount of people working on them.Toby.

I'm sorry, but I still can't see that is much different from a forum with restricted permissions.
