Hello!

I'm new here and i'd like to have some informations about Garage-Games and it's publishing proposition.

First, do you HAVE to be in USA to be published? (I'm french and i'm interested in Indie Game Developpement).

Thanks!

Make a game first, think about publishing later.

People get to cought up by all the unimportant stuff most of the time. So much even that they don't even get to making a game.

Be honnest, what good is having all the answers about being published by Garagegames or who ever whitout having a game to be published?

I understand that, and it's why i'm interested in IndieGames, but if i invest time and money in making a game that, at the end, will not be published only because i'm in France, i would be annoyed. Because in France, there is almost no indie games publisher, so my only way to break in is garage games....if you/they accept games from another country.

I'm already working on a game that may be interresting for GarageGames (and gamers) but i cannot spend money in it if i know it will never be rewarding ( if it's really a good game ;) )

It's my last constrain before investing money in developpement.

So,is it Yes or No?

Being in France should be no problem, being Frence however... :)

No seriously, being anywhere outside of the USA is no problem at all. If your game is good enough GG will publish it no matter where you live.

Just make the game. Don't worry about it. If you make a good game and GG won't publish it that doesn't mean your out of luck. At the very least you can put up a website of your own. Worry about it later. There are always possabilities.

Joel, as Jeff Tunnell would tell you himself, you shouldn't put all your eggs in the same basket : submit not only to GG, but depending on your game to other ESD distributors like PopCap, Real, etc.
And sell it direct to the customers yourself :)
If your game is accepted for publication by GG and you sign an exclusive agreement with them, they'll shop it to other online publishers.
Although, if i remember correctly, the advice given by Jeff was to sign non exclusive deals with as many publishers as you can : when you're dealing with smaller entities, you don't want one of them to have world wide rights on all the way to sell you game.
If you go box retail, you want someone that knows a particular local retail market, so that it's actually sold there.
Giving all your rights to just one publisher doesn't guarantee your game will be available everywhere, or online at all...

That said, you will most likely have to feel some paperwork for your French business to do business in the States.
Or get an American partner that will deal with the financial side of things as a legal American entity.

But, as everyone is pointing out : you should make the game first, and if worse comes worse, you just market and sell it yourself. Quite a few indies are making a living this way, by selling their games and those of other indies on their own websites.
You might want to check out IndieGamer Forums for some discussions on how to make a living as an indie.

J'espère que ça t'aide un peu, bonne chance avec la production :)
