I think a blanket 'no retro' statement serves to remind people that GG wont publish anything/everything thrown at them.

i'm sure if a "retro" game is totally freakin awesome that GG will consider it.. the 'no retro' statement serves to remind those re-making asteroids that there has to be something else besides a clone.

Jason is correct, that's the spirit of that clause in the FAQ, but I have to be honest: any general statements are quickly becoming useless---look at the fact that Microsoft is putting a direct, fully copied clone of the very old arcade game Joust on XBox 360 Arcade.

The reason for that clause is as Jason said: we don't want pure clones of other games, and "yet another variation on breakout" type things...but if you honestly have interesting and new game mechanics, or some other driving factor that makes your game extremely unique, we'd be interested in seeing a highly functional demo.

I would ignore that. If you have a really good game. Let them look at it. They will tell you it sucks. Or it's good.
You'll know just from posting in the show and tell 2d forum with feedback. If people think it's retail qual you
know then you can submit to gg to look at the thing.

Just don't take junk to GG.

However I would not write off older successfull 2d elements as being able to be sold for cash. If it's good.. they will come.

That was written before Jeff did his walkabout.

I really don't have much to add to this except:

Torque2D is not for retro-remakes. There is nothing retro about 2D. I think there is an unfair blanket cast over 2D in the gaming world. Most people say "guilty until proven innocent" about 2D, and "innocent until proven guilty" about 3D. For some reason, a 2D game is perfectly acceptable on a PSP, which has a greater capability than the PS2, and it is neigh-unacceptable on the PS2. Anyway, that's about all I have to say.

I'm going to make Phoney Hawke's Pro Fakir and prove to everyone that magic carpet riding can be fun again.

Actually, a new Magic Carpet game would be fun. Control was a little sketchy, but I loved that game.

That's all I have to say.

I think that they are saying is that if you plan on publishing a remake or rehash game you might want to look at anoher publisher. These guys here have made it pretty clear that the are intrested in new game ideas, not rehashs of old ones. I see nothing that says that they wont publish a inventive 2d game, just ones that have already been done a thousand times. Just making simething new and inventive and you'll be cool.
