Maybe they do need to in general, but what's wrong with number 7.? You're not explaining why.

Sorry, I don't understand at all.

Are you saying this because T2D is out and that GG should now accept to publish 2D games such as this? Why? GG's publishing rights don't have anything to do with T2D. You can publish your games with anyone, just as you can with all the GG products.

I'm probably not understanding what you mean though.

Some quotes from Jeff Tunnell

Quote:Just to be clear. There may be a lot of retro remakes, but they won't be published here at GarageGames.

Quote:
Bottom line is this. If we see a fun game, we will publish it. I hate to sound callous, but I can't define it any more than that.

We have published a couple of games based on a criteria that was different than being a fun game, and in every case it is a mistake.

Our bar is raising much higher in the coming year.

As to retro remakes. If you are trying to make money, don't do them. If you are doing it for fun, then knock yourself out.

We published Mutant Sotrm because it is flashy and fun. Bridge Construction set has sold about 150 times more units.

I think there is a market for free retro remakes, but making money from them is going to be difficult (unless you really know what you are doing).

ADD:

as you can see its not that they don't support people making such games... they can be great fun and learning experience, but honestly, there aren't many consumers out there willing to spend money on a 2D remake of a game they can download for free in an emulator

*shrug* just the reality of things... though you can start with games like that and work up

From my observations, there appears to be a resergence of old-school games out there, and the demand for such 2D or "retro remakes" using modern technology continues to grow. I think T2D will be an excellent alternative to existing 2D game development tools in order to address the modernization and commercialization of the retro kind.

Visit RealArcade.com to see what I mean!:) You'll be pleasantly surprised at the number of retro-type 2D games being sold in droves through them!:)

Jim,

Still a little confused here by what you're getting at.

T2D has nothing to do with a publishing agreement. GG do not promise to publish your game. GG are selling T2D and the scroller is quick two-day-dev demo for the product, nothing more. We've got several other demos to come as well, none of which are full games.

If Jay or anyone else at GG give you game ideas, that doesn't necessarily mean that they would publish it. Think of GG as people bringing you an engine. The publishing side of the business is completely seperate.

GG would publish a T2D game but it would have to be something that's worthy of their interest which isn't different from any publisher I guess. :)

Do keep in mind that the FAQ was written years ago, and T2D is brand new! I don't think in any way GG will change their standards for publishing, but they may re-work the phrasing a bit.

Yeah I think now with Torque2D you might see them expand their lineup of games.

I agree with both of you... though I doubt unless you have a retro style game with some fairly innovative and fun they would make an exception.

2d game and retro remake is not the same thing. You know, there's much more muscle in 2d than just reusing ages old ideas ;)

*completely agrees*

right now my team and I are working on a 2D RPG... style is very much like Diablo meets Resident Evil... you can get quite innovative with 2D... in fact its just easier to see your innovation :)

We have already published several 2D games. I don't care if the game is 2D, 3D, 4D, neural implants, programmed in Cobol, requires joysticks, is single player or multi-player, etc. We are just looking for fun games.

In reality, there is much more to it than that, but that is probably the subject of an ebook someday. A fun game will cover 80% of the decision making process though.

And just to point out, almost every Playstation game - if you want to get downright technical - is 2D. The system never was meant to originally support 3D, so programmers did creative hacks by caching images of 3D models in memory, then posting those images to the screen (probabaly) as sprites.

So, there ya go: A 2D game system used to play 3D games. (I'm certainly not trying to say that '2D = Retro' since I know for a fact that's an outright lie, but I thought I would add this bit of technical info for those who didn't realize what you can do with a 2D engine and some serious brain-muscle power). =)

Awesome! So there's a market for my next 6D neural-interface joystick-requiring multiplayer game written in Cobol! ;) j/k

I think you are taking the whole "retro/2D" game bit too harshly. Jeff's said many times before he's not looking for graphics or requirements, but fun factor. I feel he is basically trying to discourage the bazillion-and-one crappy space shooters/tetris clones that we ALL crap out when we first start doing game coding.

Heck, even Cloudburst I made in just two weeks... Of course, I've been doing 2D space shooters for, um, a while now.

Right Dave... especially when you look at Final Fantasy games... like the classic Final Fantasy 7... a 3D object over a 2d Static background....

and I always come down to Diablo I and II... insane ammounts of people still play Diablo II, its completely 2D, but fun :) (plus its up to Blizzard quality)

Zap....;) Fun and 2D I belive :)
And yes, FAQ should probably be changed a little bit, but who cares, let them put all workforce in development of T2D, TSE, CONSTRUCTOR...and all the sweet surprises they have in their wicked minds ;) <---Just joking of course.
