Forgive me if I shouldn't even consider posting this here, but I know a lot of ex-Dynamix guys read and Tim suggested I try. :-)
I have a problem with 3d Studio Max 4. Everytime I try to open light_male.max that is included with the models obtained from http://www.tribes2centraldownload.com/?section=download&page=description&f_filesectiontype=17&description=58 I receive an error that states "An error has ocurred and the application will now close. Would you like to save a copy of the current scene?".
I can open heavy_male.max and medium_male.max with no issues. I can also open medium_male.max and do File - Replace with light_male.max, but the alignments are all off (I am not the greatest modeller in the world). I was wondering if anyone had a clue as to what would cause this or what would fix it?
I have tried downloading the file from 3 different sources. Just for clarification, I am not trying to export the file. I am just trying to OPEN the thing so that I can edit it. Thanks in advance.

I am running MAX 4.2 and the latest Character Studio (3.1 or 3.2 or whatever the latest is)
The muitlres error Logan is getting is because the plugin ID# changed in version 4 when multires became part of MAX instead of an aftermarket addon.
My only specualtion is that there is something in that files that is choking the new character studio and that is why Logan can open it while you and I cannot.
I have seen similar problems before, and it would be great if someone with biped installed who CAN open the files could join the thread so we can determine what it is about that particular file.

But I CAN open it in the 3dmax 3.x
I have charactor studio to both 3dmax versions.

Are there any modifiers on any of the actual Biped shapes?
Is there anything different about this shape that you can see?

Is the character in .FIG mode? Are there any modifiers on any of the actual Biped shapes?

YEs there was a "Edit mesh" modifier on both toe bipeds.
No the shape dont look different from the others.
I tried to save it as a new file in 3dmax3 and then again with the edit mesh modifier deleted.
None of these files would open in 3dmax4.
I tried mergeing everything into a new file in 3dmax4 but it didint work.
I also tried the merge in smaller portions of the file and it seems that the problem is nt releated to the biped cos I can merge those as single objects.
Bottom line, I have no idea what the problem could be.

Chalk it up to one of the weird things that happens when you upgrade to a new version of MAX.
I suppose if all you wanted to do was edit the mesh, you could save the .fig out of the file in max 3, then create a box, collapse it to mesh, attach all the mesh parts (from the player shape) to it, do a save selected, open that file, and in the editable mesh, detach all the elements, make a new biped, load the fig, and then relink all the parts in the proper order.
That should work.

Thanks for all the responses folks. I'll try some of those suggestions and keep trying. BTW, Tim, Mark, Paul, Rick, whoever... The "Notify me of replies to this thread" doesn't work. ;-)Thanks again.

The only errors that I receive are the "missing plugin" errors for not having Biped installed and a Mutlires error (which I am baffled why I am receiving this).
I suspect the reason why you (and I) are seeing the opened files place all of the objects at the world space origin is because the biped skelton did not load (Character Studio isn't installed) and thus the objects have nothing to link their position to are defaulting to this location.
If the file will still not load up for you I would check your Max install to ensure that none of your files are corrupted. I would also check your Hard Drive for errors.
FYI: I am using Max 4.2x on Win2k
Let me know if you are still having troubles.
