So I go to the OpenAL page looking for the source for Linux, nada. The DLL's for are provided (or created?) in the /example directory for Windows.
What's up with Linux?

I use Red Hat 8.0. Distros shouldn't matter with Linux correct?

Are you looking at building from source? or just want a rpm? I thought in Redhat 8.0 an beyond it came with a openal package somewhere.http://www.openal.org/downloads.html

It's another one of those ease of use things.
If TGE requires OpenAL under Linux it should either ship with it or be someplace you can tell a Noob where to find it for certain.
I did a Google, got nada so here I am.

If you are a noob, Linux may not be the best choice of operating system. It is our assumption, and one we will continue to make, that people that choose to use Linux are experienced.

This series is about finding quick answers to TGE annoyances. In this case if OpenAL is required to make TGE function properly on Linux, I shouldn't have to find my Red Hat 8 disks, which are actually in St Croix at the moment, to make it work.
It should either be in the package IMHO, in the ReadMe, or made easily available by someone who has just hassled with it. So rather than complaining I am showing others where it is. Espcially since, if you go to the OpenAL site they talk about a Linux package but don't actually make one avaiable for you to download.
I have TGE running as a dedicated server at Rackspace and I am posting my solutions to the problems I run into, as I progress.
For instance the stronghold mission seems to be missing some things because I have a screen full of error messages saying the server can't find them. So it is high up on my list of bugs to squash.
I am sure someone, somewhere has compiled a dedicated server for their Linux box for the first and are scratching their heads wondering what the hell is this about.

I am a Noob who has been a Linux SysAdmin, and occasioanlly one for Sun as well, for about six years. I specialize in Oracle, Apache Webserver, JBoss, Java, Perl, and Python. Noob in this context means I am less experienced in the specifics of TGE and perhaps even gaming itself, but highly trained in other areas of technology. This series is about finding quick answers to TGE annoyances.
