NURBS surfaces vs. Mesh

by Doug Hammond · in Artist Corner · 12/14/2001 (10:02 pm) · 5 replies

Multiple questions stated as one-

1. Is there an advantage to using NURBS surfaces rather than simple mesh planes?

For example Blender - the 3d Studio I use allows you to choose Mesh > Plane/Cube/UVSphere etc.

OR

Surface (nurbs) > Sphere/Curve/Surface etc.

2. Which would be best for game modeling? Why?

NURBS is different from meshes. It does not use polygons.

NURBS is supported by many engines, but I don't know anybody who uses it.

NURBS needs much more performance than polygons.

Ok cool, I'll stick to making models with polygons (still gonna practice with NURBS though, might come in handy down the road).

Thanks.

I would suggest learning NURBS because it is the new standard for organics.
