The Top Scary Ways Monsters Attack

by Ian Smithers · in General Discussion · 03/06/2005 (4:30 pm) · 33 replies

I'll kickstart this. :)

1) Jump at your face.
2) Smash through glass to get at you.
3) Appear behind you, whilst you are admiring your player model in a mirror.

Anyone wanna continue? I am curious to see what people find scary. :)

Slowly crawl up your feet towards your face while you sit under the sheets all the while making a long throat gurgling sound. "The Grudge" got that one right. =)

A swarm of little ones bite you everywhere and won't let go. A giant spider shoots web at you and wraps you up.

Appear directly in front of you after you round a corner, and if you turn to run, have another appear behind you. Nothing like being trapped. :)

My favorite "scary monster" game that I've played is Alone in the dark. The graphics are hardly convincing, but the music and the cinematics were perfect. Every so often you'd hear wicked metal twisting creaking sounds supposedly coming from the basement. Most of the time all was quiet except your footsteps. Whenever a monster or something came, a very loud music note hit and scared you out of your pants. Then the music was just creepy. When you died, you were dragged by a zombie to a satanic sacrificing altar. That stuff just freaks me out. One of the monsters was a ghost that could kill you, but you couldn't kill it. It was locked inside a library, and you had to find a secret book in the library. The ghost could go through the shelves and walls in the library, so it was hard to know how close it was, and it always freaked me out when it came through the shelves right behind me. The camera in this game does not track the player, but jumps from angle to angle. So it's always hard to see what's around the corner.

For me a scary monster has nothing to do with appearance (the ghost above was just translucent circles), but the mood of the game and behavior of the monsters. If the game sets a scary mood, a little white bunny hopping in a meadow could scare me to death.

Yeah! AITD was awesome, the film was not... thanks Mr Boll. :s

But I know what you mean about the ghost in the library, I think you can kill it, I can't remember how tho. Hehe I remember telling my friends about the opening where you are stuck in the attic and the monster jumps up and smashes through the window, I explained in great detail how a "chicken monster with big yellow teeth" attacked you. They asked me why a chicken had teeth, and I was forced to say that now I think about it, it was probably a werewolf... -_- That just gives you an idea of the gfx this game had hehe. ;)

I find it most terrifying when they begin a sentence with 'i really like you but..'

You're walking down a dark hallway and suddenly you hear a noise behind you. You turn around but there is nothing there. As you turn back around you see a monster standing in front of you.

I dont know, scariest game i ever played though was System Shock 2

like everything in that game was scary, the whole setting was scary

the fact that your gun could and probably WOULD lock up or be out of ammo when you tried to fire it

Hahaha Orion. :D
@Eric: Yeah thats kinda cool. I liked the way they created a sense of no matter what, you were not safe. Monsters respawned, guns locked, ammo was scarce etc. That was cool.

The scariest way that a monster attacks?

It's when it doesn't.

But it lets you know it COULD have at any time.

The monster that is smart enough to toy with you, and remain hidden. At least for a while. You will eventually need a payoff.

I don't like scary....

but I guess ghosts would prob do the trick. Maybe if your game has NPCs, you later find out that one of them is supposed to be dead. You try shooting him, but then nothign happens....and then he rematerializes as an eerie ghost....

lol just read Jay's post - i guess it builds on top of that

A guy with night vision goggles with three dots on them and a SOCOM pistol sneaking up on you with his arm around your neck and the other one with the muzzle in your ear.

I must be getting really obsessed with Splinter Cell :-)

My sister sneaks up on me all the time when im rounding corners. She'll jump out and pounce on me like a cat. I have become rather immune to it:

I always put my back to the wall and peek around the corner so she'll miss if she jumps out. I sometimes crouch down as i peek so she will miss me once again.

I always trick her by saying things like, "oh i forgot something in my room" and then when you come back, say something else that will make her wait. Eventually she gives up.

To get back on topic. . .

They paralyze you in the dark just as you're starting to drift off to sleep. Your whole body wakes up but your eyes do not open. You hear the sound of them rushing up on you like a strong breeze in hot foul weather while everything else is unaturally silent. The sound of their gnarled claws scraping against the wooden floor and catching on the carpet as they surround you makes you struggle even more to break free of whatever holds you still. You feel the cold clamminess of a presence with no real form crawl over you. Its hot breath moves over you like some inverse fever chill. It hovers over your face caressing you with a tangible glare of evil.

As it leans closer to your face, you are over whelmed by a breath as foul as charnel house on a hot summers day. Your mouth slacks open as it inhales and you are aware of something leaving you in a steady trickle. Your body shivers as coldness subsumes you, beginning at your fingertips and feet, numbing them and then making its way to your torso. Your lips are numb and feel almost frostbitten. Your heart pounds so hard it feels as though it might burst and you begin to fall into a dizzyness and nausea as you feel like you're fading away.

As the last vestiges of your essence threaten to leave you force yourself to struggle witht he most primal, survival driven, force you can muster. You manage to twist ever so slightly and break its connection with you mouth and nose. In that briefest of instants you scream. Your scream is like a thousand sharp daggers to it and you hear the rustling sound of it with great speed across the floor, up the wall into some dark place on the ceiling. . . and then it's gone and you're free.

Your wife comes running into the room from wherever else she'd been, asking what what's wrong and why you shouted. You tell her nothing, all the while scanning the dark spots in the ceiling for some hint of it. "I just had a bad dream honey," you tell her but the pressure marks on your wrist and upper arms where something held you tell you thats a lie. The numbness of youre lips and the frost that has gathered on you moustache help to confirm that suspiscion. It's damn near 90 degrees in the house, 100 outside but you're shivering. You can see your breath but it fades.

You know it will come again. That's the horror. It always comes again and you don't know when. It may be a few days or couple months, but it will come back.

It'll be weeks before you can comfortably let yourself fall alseep again. Once long ago you managed to get your eyes open. You've sworn never to make that mistake again. You think that it might be easier to just give in but some deep down instinct tells you that giving in only makes it worse. You'd be one of its children, the other things you hear when it comes calling. You don't know why it chose you but you do know you have to fight.

Feeling insects eating your entrails, and then realizing they had to eat through a lot more to actually get to your innards.
