Maya Exporter Needed
by Christopher T. Morrissey · in Artist Corner · 12/10/2001 (3:17 pm) · 38 replies
If there are any programers out there that would be interested in building a maya exporter that would conform to the TGE standards ? There is a great interest in one from a few of us in the community, personaly im sick of exporting then importing into Max, its a huge waste of my time.

I haven't taken a look at the Torque format, but it seems pretty similar to HalfLife from what I've seen. And I can't use Character Studio after learning Maya's animation system. =)

How different are the Torque animations compared to say, the Half-Life format? Escape Factory (www.escapefactory.com) has a Maya (3?) to HalfLife exporter with source, wondering how easy would it be to update it to Maya 4 (advantages of college I guess, always using the latest ver =) and modify it to support the Torque format.I haven't taken a look at the Torque format, but it seems pretty similar to HalfLife from what I've seen. And I can't use Character Studio after learning Maya's animation system. =)

So if you plan on making a game which will eventually generate money then using your student version could get you in trouble.

As far as I know you are never allowed to use your student license in a commercial product. So if you plan on making a game which will eventually generate money then using your student version could get you in trouble.

But it's not preventing us from using the student license to make player models for learning/demo purposes, and maybe if the project gets funding, be able to get a full license.

If there was a situation where revenue was an issue then i would have no problem paying out the cash for a full Maya Builder licence.
Not everyone is in this for commercial gain personally i'm more interested in the process of creating a game from start to finish.

I have no intention of creating a product that generates any revenue at this current point anything done will be purely for personal use or given away for free.If there was a situation where revenue was an issue then i would have no problem paying out the cash for a full Maya Builder licence.

Maya os Less than MAx now and has always been a better package from day 1. I would take maya 1.0 over max "any version" any day of the week. Maya is only $1900 for Maya Complete now wich includes Sub-D modeling!!!! MAX Can't touch this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comparing 3D software is like trying to get a room full of people to agree what is the one best food in the whole world to eat or the best softdrink. You will get varrying suggestions, comments and opinions all based on personal opinions of the individual and in the end you will end up in a room full of angry arguing people and will be no further along than when you first started.
3D software is a tool and as such it does not dictate the quality or quantity of the work that you produce because this is entirely based on the skills, talent, and abilities of the user.
I would also argue that at this point and time all of the major 3D software on the market is pretty much equal in their capabilites and features. The reason why specific 3D packages are choosen for specific tasks or project is because a) the software is what the artists want to use and b) the software fits within the company's production pipeline (very important).

James, I seriously disagree with your comments on your posting and not because I am a Max user, but because I feel that your comments are biased and based on complete misinformed bullshit.Comparing 3D software is like trying to get a room full of people to agree what is the one best food in the whole world to eat or the best softdrink. Maya Complete no lists : $1999
Fact:
Max 5 Cost: $3,495
plus the cost of character studio wich is about $1k
You are looking at about $4495 wich is well over doubled the price of Maya.
It is like you seem to have a hard time believing that anyone could prefer Maya over MAX when in fact pricing alone could justify it.
and not to mention I have seen MAX crash WAY more times than I have seen Maya crash. I find that funny since I have spent a LOT more time around Maya.

But what do I know I'm misinformed.

Oh yeah and lets not for get that Maya runs on Windows, Linux, and on MAC. Wich means that someone does not have to get a windows computer just to do 3D work. But what do I know I'm misinformed.

Personally I don't care what software people use as long as they are happy about it and it is serving their needs. If you compare software based on its costs, all the power to you, but as I said in response one of your many assinine posts about software pricing... I don't think that any of the big 3D software packages are better than the others, they're all pretty much equal at this point in time.Logan

Try it out!!! Before I went to college, max was the only 3d program I knew, and I loved it, but once I learned Maya, I can't go back to max it's the same reason I stopped painting pictures in MSPaint when I got Photoshop. Now I know why all the Maya teachers at school make fun of max so bad.
ok, enough of that. I don't know much about mel scripting, but I do know it's easier than max script, so someone who knows how could make up a mel script.

Ive seen both crash like a very crashy thing on many occasions.
Maya plugins shouldnt be too hard to write, but theyre apparently a bitch to debug.
