Questions before i buy....again

by Gavin Beard · in Torque Game Engine · 03/01/2005 (3:34 am) · 13 replies

Ok, so i brought the sdk, and wasnt keen, and got a refund, however looking around it seems not much exists.

just a few q's i need answering and imma see about buy it again *slaps own wrist* (and sorry if this is the wrong forum)

1.) all the fps games seem to have massive terrains. can u specify (easily) a differnt size terrain. ie. so u could make a small square terrain that could fit it all on screen.

2.)is it easy to turn the editors and console off for districuted exe files.

3.) is the 2d support up to much? i.e for overlays etc. (and can u have camera in camera kinda stuff)

and finally 4.) is there a way to hide or get rid of the .dso files one final distribution (so they r not accessable by users)

sorry for my ignorance :)

    Ok some quick answers

    1. You can specify a smaller mission area or remove the terrain alltogether and use a structure created in quark or a similar program.

    2. Yes you can turn off the editors and consol and even remove the editor directories for re-distribution

    3. Standard TGE 2D consists of GUI controls, which can be used as overlays. In fact the view of the game itself is actually a GUI canvas of a special sort. Camera in Camera is possible with a bit of coding. Such as for a rear view mirror from a car etc.

    4. The .DSO files are binaries so it doesn't matter if the user sees them as they can't be edited.

    Thats all the questions. I'm sure someone from GG can expand on this if need be.

    Thx, does specifying a smaller mission area make the terrain smaller? if not what s the size of the fixed terrain?

    @Gavin: We would prefer that you do not purchase Torque again.

    Tried blitz3d/max - and although easy enough to code in still lacks somewhat
    @jeff - would prefer but cannot stop ;)
    @robert - how on earth do u know i'm looking for something simple / intermed. I just prefer something with a little more substance and control, and until i find the perfect c++ sdk for me torque will have to do

    Use Irrlict. Or OGRE. Both are C++, and are engines where you haven't willingly dissected yourself from the support base and engine manufacturer.

    If you're skilled in C++, you'd might like to use David Eberly's Wild-Magic 3 graphics engine. You can use it for free, and its not GPL. Its at http://www.geometrictools.com.

    The book "3D Game Engine Architecture" serves as his documentation for that engine, so you'd want to get that too.

    @David Blake
    how can u willingly dissect yourself from a support base and s/w developer by initially being unhappy with a product it our given right is it not? and if thats all it takes to offend a few ppl i seriously suggest they sort themselves out, its almost childish

    @louis
    thanks for ure help, appreciated

    Hmmmm, I can see where youre coming from Gavin, but in the end the fact is you should have researched all the available engines at the time BEFORE you purchased TGE. Would I have trusted my facts only to GG members? Absolutely not! While TGE is a AAA engine, costs only $100, and I think VERY highly of it; most GG members seem to be fanboys of it and will try to get you to buy it no matter what. Just an observation - the facts may be different.

    Considering the situation the LEAST you could do is show Jeff some respect.

    Yeah, exactly.

    And he can stop you if he likes to Gavin, he's co-founder of this site, he has the right to deny you the package, but he probably won't do it because he's a nice guy. You on the other hand, you're the black sheep in this instance. As Stephen (Edit: sorry, it was Nate) said above, you should had researched all the engines available to you before buying one and then returning it. Excuse me but, if you don't do that - then you're just lame and stupid.

    Before I bought TGE, I checked out all the free ones, the GPL ones and one or two commercial ones. I then considered it very well before deciding that I wanted Torque. I've never returned to the others.

    I just can't see how you're so disrespectful to someone who actually did you a favour and let you return their product back because you fucked up and made a mistake. Personally, I hope he doesn't let you do it again.

    Before I bought TGE, I had a large amount of experience with Tribes 2 modding, so I was biased. However, I had also tried a large number of free engines, foremost being Irrlicht.

    It could be used for making gelatinous blobs, perhaps for a 3d version of Gish.
