2 New Texture Packs
by Leadwerks · in General Discussion · 02/25/2005 (11:09 am) · 26 replies
We've put together two new texture packs at www.leadwerks.com, a UT2004-style sci-fi pack, and a terrain texture pack. Both are available in high-res versions (1024x1024).

Excellent work, though.

Nice. I'd remove half of the watermarking, though, since it's difficult to see the detail with the watermarks in some of the section.Excellent work, though.

You buy them, we make more. No one buys them, we close down the site.

We're thinking about starting a media service. Users would pay something like $19.95 a month, and get access to all produced textures and models, as well as all existing media (in our high-res 1024x1024 versions). We could put out new texture and model packs every month, and post our plans a couple months in advance. Users could vote for the media they want the most. I could get a ton of quality art made for independent developers to use. Textures, models, sound, everything. I have three really good artists that are just sitting around with nothing to do right now.

Good luck with it, though. I'm interested in seeing the direction you take with it. I love the work put into CShop and am always interested in seeing the paths indie developers forge.

The media site is an interesting idea, but you'll definitely need a larger body of work that is dated (as in release dates not arcane). A Daz3D-esque setup could be quite nice and profitable. The reason for having dated material is to show that you're committed to releasing art content on a scedule. With the current small webshop, I'd be pressed to purchase a subscription, but wouldn't be hard pressed to purchase individual pack as their quality is very, very good. But if I pay for a subscription, will I get anything beyond what's there?Good luck with it, though. I'm interested in seeing the direction you take with it. I love the work put into CShop and am always interested in seeing the paths indie developers forge.

I want no less than ten people to start with, so we need just a few more. He's ready to go, but I can't afford to keep paying him to make super-high-quality texture packs that no one buys. My web site transferred about 200 megs yesterday, but we haven't had a single sale. As long as people are standing on the sidelines and not willing to try anything, the site will probably be discontinued.
I have like 3 artists sitting around with nothing to do, one of which has worked on AAA games. It would be nice to put them to work, but I can't really afford to pay for an art team out of my own pocket, when I am not going to make any money back.

Well, I have a reputation to maintain, and putting out shitty quality media isn't something I want to be known for. Everyone knows I have the highest standards in the indy community. The textures are done by Alec Moody, and he is bad-ass, so you know everything will be good.I want no less than ten people to start with, so we need just a few more. Some might consider that insulting, Josh... are you saying you have higher standards than me? Or David? Or Garney? Or Logan?

I tried to buy the WWII media packs from the Leadwerks site, but wasn't able to about a month ago, so I bought them through the Game Creators instead. The weapons are nice for fairly low poly, but the transparent textures don't work right in Torque. Also, Quark or maybe mapToDif won't export the map files as they come. All in all, I'm satisfied with the quality, but I think they would get more sales at GG if they were game ready. The textures look very nice btw.

Our team doesn't have an artist and so I have really been looking at buying art assets like this online.
The media service idea that you mentioned above would be great for us, and while I didn't buy your texture packs
on my first visit to your website I do plan to, hopefully there are others that feel the same way.
Keep up the good work.

Also your last post made you sound very pushy and arrogant.

I like some of the textures in the sci-fi pack.. but I only have use for about 3 of them... and I can't spend $19.99 for just 3 textures... maybe you could sell them separate? Also your last post made you sound very pushy and arrogant.

Allan, what are you posting? Are you in the right thread?

Good luck.
And again, I have no idea about the reference photos. They're nice, but I'm confused about their context in this thread.

I have no idea what's going on, either. I was just giving my comments about the watermarking obscuring details more than being a texture theft deterent. As I have said from the beginning, good work. I love his guns as well. He's definitely talented. Unfortunately, I don't have need of such textures NOW. Who knows what the future will bring, but they don't match my currrent project set. But I'm sure that they will fit others because they are excellent textures.Good luck.

That's good. But it doesn't garauntee that you will keep up the work like a "company" could garauntee it.
I love the idea though, but I'm not sure about themes and stuff. Maybe for terrain textures, but interiors usually require a theme of textures rather than totally seperate ones with different styles, to look nice and solid.
And making a theme of textures for the subscribers might not be the path to go either, as that will limit who can use them and who can not.

Josh, just for help you about your marketing choice, here is my reflexion about subscription based media service :
The last year I have purchased the "Professional 13month Subscription" for $80 at
www.texturemonk.com.
The service was excellent, the quality too. Now I have a dozen of DVD full of texture...
But I'm interested by sci-fi texture and most of their work is modern realistic oriented.
I have canceled my subscription, even if for the price it's really a good deal.
I prefer to spend money into themed content pack.
I can spend ten more money for pack that better fit my need.
I prefer to buy here and here a sky box pack, a ground texture pack, a sci-fi buiding texture pack, a space ship model pack.
It's just my 2 cents

I tried texturemonk too, but was disappointed. They just take photos and make them seamless. The building textures have 3 dimensional objects sticking out of them like balconies and potted plants. They would look okay in a racing game, but not in anything where you could go up to the building. They also don't normalize the colors, so everything looks kind of thrown together.

What I want to explain is that in a customer point of view, it is not really easy to pay for some future content, because your don't know if it will fit your need.
If the subscription give access to all existing content, most customers will only subscribe one month, grab the content and if their are happy, come back 6 or 12 month later for a new 1 month subscription.
By the way, I will visit your website regulary, your current work is very nice.
