I have no idea what are usual fees for 3d and 2d artists. For instance how much is fee for nice looking(3500+ polies) animated creature/character, or set of custom textures.

Example estimates are...
3500 poly vehicle
4-hours modelling ($20/hr)
6-hours unwrapping and texturing($25/hr)
______
$230
I am lower than the others discussed because I am still a college student who is working and looking for experience at the same time.

I don't want to sound like an advertisement but I probably will. If anyone is interested, I am a 3d artist with lower fees than most discussed her. If you're interested, you can visit my website at www.matt3d.com and email me for price quotes.Example estimates are...

I think that post is aimed at me... but if you read it, I don't say I am better and I clearly explain why I charge lower prices.

It just depends on how steady a stream of work they are going to get, why they are doing it in the first place. If you find the right guy that is simply doing up his portfolio and trying to expand his repetoir, or does it mostly for fun in his free time and has a steady income but really likes doing it, you can get much lower prices and on occasion work for free.

I think you will be surprised how low a price some artists will put on their work, if they believe its a worthy cause. I know some talented people that will work much cheaper on the right kind of project. $60 per skin $60 - $100 per model with mapping. It just depends on how steady a stream of work they are going to get, why they are doing it in the first place. I agree- problem is most of indie developers treat low prices as a rule- not an exception. Compairing number of games published on Torque with numbers of ones started (described as would-be-hits requiring high profile artist for low profile price) does not make prospect of working for royalties or "just for fun" very interesting. In portfolio it hardly matters in how many unfinished projects one took part - all agencies and employers ask : "how many succesfull titles ..."

Sounds like a proper thread to post price quotes/"adverts" there Radoslaw

Deep apologies. I got too much into discussion and lost original post from my field of view.

I'm usualy involved with level design, and building environments both interior and exterior, with some vehicle and FX work. PLus scripting in 3dsmax. Havent done much else in 3 years, so currently I'm doing 4 character models, rigging and animation for a prototype childrens game which includes research, concept drawing, modeling, mapping, texturing, and rigging for $200 each.
Nice thing about doing it for cheap is that I don't have much pressure and get to do it in my own time.

Yeah, you won't get hired without the experience and titles, but a lot of studios with smaller teams like the ones I prefer working for often want someone that can offer a diverse range of skills rather than being pigeon holed, plus as a freelance artist, I often like to expand my portfolio to show other things that I havent done in commercial games. custom work (art, code, design, web development, etc) costs more
plain and simple, if you go to a site with preset models it will be cheaper most likely, custom work takes time and it is only for one person/group. You pay for that person's extended time and sole focus.
You can find web hosting dirt cheap, some free templates (possibly even included in the hosting) and some decent free website creation programs (online and offline ones)... all of this dirt cheap, few bucks a month...
You go to proffesional web developers and they charge 60-80 per page... $100 per hour of flash coding, $$$ for database back end dynamic web developed content...
You get what you pay for, your paying for not only their service but their experience.
