Free 3D modeller that imports .x or .b3d files?

by Wysardry · in Artist Corner · 02/19/2005 (10:08 pm) · 8 replies

Does anyone know of a free (Win98) 3D modelling program that can import DirectX or Blitz3D files and export them in a more common format (for importing into Milkshape)?

A free conversion program would do.

G'day!
first one that comes to mind is www.blender3d.com , it can import direct x, and can export many formats with uvmap support (obj and wrl and some others)
im not too sure if blenders direct x exporter supports bones or not tho, youll want to look into the md5 format if blender cant do bones in direct x, md5 does bones nps
ciao!

Unless the site is out of date (which is possible), the only DirectX plugin is for exporting. I saw no mention of importing DirectX or Blitz3D files.

The only software I am aware of that imports B3D is Lightray3D.

http://www.sxcreations.com/lr3d/lightray3d.php

There's a free version that will IMPORT B3D files, but the free version only exports their proprietary format (.ray). And of course, finding anything that imports .ray is impossible. =)

However, if you pay the $95 for the licensed version, you have what may be the only software on the market that will import B3D format models into an editable and convertable format.

Kevin: The reason I need to read DirectX or Blitz3D files is that I'd like to use a freeware tree modelling program which outputs in those formats (plus it's own proprietary format).

There is a paid version which outputs in additional formats and costs less than the program you suggest, but I'd prefer to see how the trees look in Torque before buying it.

Terence: Again, according to their site, Accutrans only seems to export DirectX files, not import them. No mention is made of Blitz3D files.

You probably will not find a better free 3d program than Blender... it has an insane ammount of power... I'd search their forums for the importer

Matthew: Blender's forums at elysiun seem to be down at present.

Vincent: Thank you. I'll give that one a try. :)
