Let's make an alternative to Quark!

I don't like Quark, and from the forums it looks like the many of you don't either, so why don't we start a community wide project to develop a better dif construction program? That way we can all contribute to it and make sure that it has the functionality that we want and that it stays free and available for commercial project development. What do you think? Why isn't anyone doing this?

I for one am not doing it because I am here to make games, not csg editors. ;)

Why isn't anyone like me doing this currently? It comes down to ROI - it just wouldn't be worth it to me personally for all I would have to put into it. I mean, you're talking a HUGE project here. And for all the quirks in Quark, I can't see how it could be worth it.
That is, unless you were wanting to make some money by licensing the new program - that I could understand since there does seem to be a lot of demand for it (which I still don't personally understand... but whatever!)
As to a community project - ick. Most community projects fail because they experience the problem of the 'tragedy of the commons'. Look it up. Don't believe it? Then you are free to try it. You are also free to try drinking gasoline. I recommend neither.

Well, as a Quark user, I have never understood what the big problem is. I just have never seen why people don't like Quark. Why isn't anyone like me doing this currently? It's not that I don't like it so much as it doesn't run on my system.
If it worked in linux, all would be good, and I wouldn't complain. But it doesn't, so I do.
In the end, affording torque was a push; I most definitely can't afford a windows license, and don't consider it worth it even if I could.

I've been thinking about this as well. Of course I could use CShop or Quark at the moment so I'm not super pressed but maybe once BlitzMax get's it's GUI and 3D modules a nice cross platform CSG interior editor can be made.

Oh well.

Well damn, apparently my attempt at getting the community to make a level editor for my Mac isn't going to work... ;)Oh well.

Please don't bug Valve. We will have some announcements in this area soon.

However, creating a good, solid application is a huge undertaking, but I'm a decent developer and my time is precious, yet I'd devote some of it to contribute it to a worthy project like this.
So if there's interest and there's a movement, I'll tag along and do some grunt's work. I won't lead it though.

I would like to see a good alternative to Quark mainly, but not solely, because it isn't cross-platform.However, creating a good, solid application is a huge undertaking, but I'm a decent developer and my time is precious, yet I'd devote some of it to contribute it to a worthy project like this.

@ Jeff - okay, now you've piqued my curiosity. Why do I feel like a kid on the night before Christmas all of a sudden I wonder ")

I'm with Brandon. I'd Love to have a map editor that would run in Mac OS X.@ Jeff - okay, now you've piqued my curiosity. Why do I feel like a kid on the night before Christmas all of a sudden I wonder ")

@James - Yeah I know, I keep checking the website 20 times a day looking for signs of a new map editor. I could never sleep the night before Christmas as a kid, I guess this is basically the same thing.

Once you get the hang of it though it is not bad, I bet the people who made it are comfortable with it - as would be the case if you made your own.

I see why people don't like quark. It is just not like other programs (not user friendly, might be accurate).Once you get the hang of it though it is not bad, I bet the people who made it are comfortable with it - as would be the case if you made your own.

I don't want it to come across that I hate Quark and don't appreciate it being there, I do. I just wish I could find a program that fit my needs better.

Yeah the more I have used Quark the more I've learned and I can get most basic things done. It is definitely better than nothing, and I love that it is free. But the fact that it is not cross platform, and that I keep running into bugs, makes me want to look for another solution. I don't want it to come across that I hate Quark and don't appreciate it being there, I do. I just wish I could find a program that fit my needs better.
