Anyone tried gtkRadiant?

by Dreamer · in Technical Issues · 02/17/2005 (8:20 am) · 9 replies

I'm just wondering if anyone has tried to use gtkRadiant from http://www.qeradiant.com/ and if you have what your thoughts are on it.
It looks like a great tool to me, and I think it can export to a format that our tools can use.

Anyways thoughts?

Radiant is an awesome tool for mapping interiors, however, if you intend to produce a 'commercial' product, you'll have to license it to the tune of about 5K.

For those keeping track - that's roughly $4,900 more than you spend on Torque as your game engine.

Go figure. =\

Here I thought it was GPL

Everyone makes that mistake because they don't read the licensing.

No biggie, so I downloaded and installed it, the thing segfaults on me as soon as I try to create a new map.
No idea why, and gdb is not being really helpful in the matter.
So currently what are the options if any for someone using TGE to develop assets under linux?

Wine and Cartography Shop or QuArK...which aren't optimal in any respect.

Wine and quark sucks raw eggs through a very thin straw.

If you loko about, someone's trying to get blender to export .maps, which would be cool.

I contacted ID a while ago about radiant licensing, and it was made clear that it's 5 grand.

Of course, if you want to release your game for free [if you release it at all], knock yourself out on radiant, it's easily the best tool for the job.

Actually, I think that boiled eggs would be a better analogy.

As I said, free or otherwise on my setup at least the only thing it appears capable of doing is segfaulting :(
I wish it would spit something out letting me know what it's choking on, but even GDB appears to be no help at figuring this out. Oh well.
Let's hope someone can get blender to export .maps under linux, I would be willing to pay some bux for a way to make assets under linux.

Well I finally got the thing to stop segaulting (had a bad OpenGL config) anyways looks like a great tool, too bad about the licensing issue... Gotta wonder though with that license, whether it would be worth learning. The docs are so out dated it appears that there are no plans for a linux version LOL.
