Texture changes on the fly

I have some elements in my project that I need to have the textures change on the fly, by user imput.
Model-wise, the room would be the same, but I want the player to be able to change the environment apperance.
For example, this would be used in an interior where a stone wall would change to a mirrored wall or a tapestry hung wall, triggered by a keyboard event.
Could this be easily done using the same *.DIF file?
