Marketing opportunity plus lateral cross-marketing general talk

Quote:TO ALL - Marketing Opportunity: I just got back from being with Michael Robertson as he launched MP3tunes.com and already its making big waves. I've been looking for the right partner for GG to tie our games in with up and coming indie bands that would 'get' our culture, be willing to do cross promotions and help makes some tracks with us. (I realize we have some incredible indie talent around the garage, I'm just looking for the cross promotional opportunities that would feed groups that are focused on thier music and love to be playing at like a 'rave' style e3 rollout party featuring one of our studios games. Well I have lots of dreams for promotions, but this one maybe getting closer.
Jay Moore posted the above in my .plan but it really belongs in a thread for maximum exposure.
I also wanted to offer a general topic for discussion along the lines of what Jay is talking about with regard to lateral partners. I think it's great that GG doesn't turn their nose up at working with big companies like Microsoft to get their game on Xbox or Nvidia to get tech for IGC, and that's horizontal partnership, but what's also of interest and being explored is the idea of lateral partnerships with cousin industries.
For example, partnering with some indie rock bands to do the soundtrack for a game. Or partnering with some indie movie makers to do the video game version of their movie (an indie gamemaker doing a game version of something like Cube? sure, why not. an indie gamemaker doing a gamer version of something like Alien vs Predator? not a chance!).
Discuss, discuss...

It makes me very sad when things like this happen. Possibly I am an idealist, but I strongly believe in the team concept and symbiotic business. It just baffles me why someone would be so selfish as to undercut someone else to get ahead.

Thanks, but i'm not sure I want to be here :P
@Jay you hit it right on the nose, you should only do what you want with who you want, or else what good is doing anything?

@ Jay, I totally agree with you about the sharks comment. Recently a small budget movie company approached my college with the possibility of creating a game in conjunction with their movie. The only catch was that we had to pitch them our schedule and budget. Our team worked on it and have since pitched it to the company, only to have them take it and repitch it to a professional design team. I am just thankful that we didn't do any additional work on the game before we handed it over to them...It makes me very sad when things like this happen. Possibly I am an idealist, but I strongly believe in the team concept and symbiotic business. It just baffles me why someone would be so selfish as to undercut someone else to get ahead.

I feel bad for you man. That was terrible.
Ditto. I couldn't have said it better. I almost think that they are more like Vultures. They don't fight for their own ideas. They fight to steal someone else's. It's messed up. I just don't understand how they sleep at night.

Finding like minded bands or indie film makers who are genuine in a desire to co-promote as well as have talent, a solid fit thats works and are willing to find ways to partner takes both being open to finding that opportunity and vetting lots of 'opportunities' that at face value look like they have potential, but that also can get done with follow through and value-add to both parties.
I look for value partnerships everywhere - its part of my marketing dna, but like any relationship its important to look at motives and benefits. Life is short - you have to pick projects you want to work on with people you want to work with.
