Weird idea: Asset Exchange

Ok, how about this...

Prior to the next GID, we each contribute a semi-random resource to a common pool (custom sound/music clips, 2d sprites, 3d models, gameplay ideas, anything*) and you can take out one thing from another contributor to use in your game. It's like "asynchronous" collaboration or something, and could get the creative juices flowing for the rest of the game. (or become a liability!)

You would have to put in to take something out, though, and you should limit yourself to just one or two contributions instead of just dumping a ton of stock resources. Part of the challenge is to select something weird or interesting submitted by a fellow GIDer and see what you can do with it. Once something is "taken out" it can only be used by that person, to avoid everybody using the same super-cool snake ninja model. =)

Also, it'd be more about the spirit of the exchange, so you don't have to use the exact resource if you want to create your own variation of it. Like the GID itself, there'd be no hard and fast rules.

Anyway, I could host the files on my webserver, and the "swapping" can be done on this message board. Hmmm, or we could go the Secret Santa route and distribute them randomly somehow. I dunno... whaddya think, sirs?

Joe

* anything you are legally able to submit, of course. And you agree to giving a fellow GIDer a no-strings-attached license to make millions off of your amazing talent!

That sounds kinda cool as a GID theme.

We've talked about things along these lines before in various guises. The main reccuring problem is that most of the regulars are busy with their real projects and cant really spare the time to do anything like that in advance.

I dont think there's enough time to organise this for GID10. However, it is worth thinking about for GID11.

Personally, I think it would work better such that a pool of assets is created through submissions and leaching from Digital Boneyard, the resources, etc. Anyone can then use any of them, with no restrictions. Yes, that will mean the same super-cool snake ninja model may get reused in multiple games, but that can be a good thing. Early on there was a great GID where two people (I think it was Xavier Amado and James Urquhart) used the same game idea, but approached it from different angles. The result was pretty funny. I'd like to see more of that, and this could promote it.

So, lets kill two birds with one stone and start an asset pool on gameinaday.com. The general idea being that between now and GID11, if anyone has spare assets they dont mind being used for GID, or would like to create them, send them to me at fos2k4@gmail.com. Please ask first before emailing something thats larger then 1 or 2MB. It would also be good if someone could go through the existing resources and any other sites and send me a list of links to them that look OK for GID use.

As far as rights go ... It would be preferable if the assets were free to use as the user wishes. Restricted to non-commercial use only is fine, though. When creating assets, make sure that you let me know when emailing any restrictions on use. When sourcing assets from other sites, make sure you check the license and only send me links not the assets themselves.

As for GID10, an announcement will be made soon. In true GID tradition, GID10 is going to be a bit last minute :)

Game beavers -- world domination through collaboration

Game beavers assets would not be suitable for this as it would require everyone using them to join game beavers. Of course, thats not stopping any game beavers members using game beavers assets for GID since they legally can.

GID assets need to be free to use for GID by anybody without having to jump through any hoops to get them.
