BattleTech Simulator Demo 3 Available

by Derk Adams · in General Discussion · 01/26/2005 (10:07 am) · 17 replies

Greetings,

My development progress has gotten to a point where I am willing to show it in the hopes of getting some assistance with models, textures, and eventually sound.

Please feel free to download Demo 3 (under Demo Downloads) and give me feedback on my progress. Do realize that it is not a complete game, rather a snapshot into my progress. If you would like to assist my project development please contact me by email (no need to fill up the forum with it).

You can find information about the project at http://battletech.freestarthost.com/

Thanks.

EDIT: The url is now http://www.virtualcommander.com/

Not to be a "negative nancy" but many people have issues with using IP that they aren't allowed to have. I haven't d/l the game, yet, but I would be causous using the BattleTech name.

Anthony,

It is just a redirection. If someone complains and they take it away, I'll edit the link to the actual location.

Thanks.

Cool so far
is the torso twist ( < and > ) soposed to jump like that? I was expecting it to quicky and smoothy twist.

Alot of people may have issues with you using IP thats not yours, but i think as long as you are a fan of something and if you dont make any money off it that its ok. I mean you go to many websites and read stories of whatever universe (x-men, mech warrior......etc) and thats ok. This is what the fun of modding is all about, or even making your own game or story.

Its absolutely awesome to see another person interested in BattleTech but you have to be careful using IP thats not yours, especially in this case - BattleTech is copyrighted and trademarked out the yin-yang.

Absolutely 100% false from a legal standpoint. There have been many non-profit, fan-driven projects that have been shut down with extreme prejudice by their respective IP owners. You are really at the mercy of them and their lawyers.

Sometimes they'll offer permission, especially if they see your fan-based activity as an opportunity for free marketing. But it really depends. While sometimes it's better to ask forgiveness than permission, if you don't want to throw a lot of time and effort into something that might get shut down completely, you'll want to either sever direct relations with the IP or get permission.

Good point

now that im thinking about it, there was a Dragon Ball mod for quake 3,
that had to remove all dragon ball content, they still released it, but with diff worlds and fighters. They even a file elsewhere to d/l so you could get the dragon ball models back in.

Chris,

I actually only added the keyboard support for torso control because it "should" be there. The mouse is a much better control device for the torso. You should find the mouse much smoother.

Jay,

As I commented above, the name is only a redirection, it is not a purchased domain name. If it gets taken away, I just switch to http://adamsderk.freestarthost.com/bts/. No biggie.

And if someone really wants me to not use the word "Battletech" then I remove the word. It doesn't really change anything, nor does it keep me from creating a program for my own use.

Thanks.

Maybe i am way to used to playing mech warrior Mercs.
I like how they have there controls set up
arrows movment
< > for torso
and mouse for aiming, but it did not move the torso

Chris,

Did you look at the keyboard.pdf file? It tells you all of the active keys. The reticle is locked to the center of the screen, you twist and pitch the torso to bring the weapons to bear on a target. You can use the keyboard for torso control but the mouse will do both the twist and the pitch.

I agree that the keys for torso control are way too big of jumps and I'll fix it in the next version.

Thanks.

I think that nobody here really gives a rat's - well you know - if you use 'Battletech' or any of its IP. Our point is that you need to be careful using it because there are those (WizKids) out there who do care.

Maybe it's obvious to everyone, but just to point it out: what Nate and Anthony are getting at is IP like in 'Intellectual Property' not like in 'a subdomain/IP address'.

Someone holds the copyright for BattleTech (FASA?).

Even with removing the name, if the art resembles Battletech art, it'd still be using the Battletech IP and your still in trouble.

Max Gaming has/had contacts at WizKids/FASA and we tried to see if we could do a battletech game a few years back. Dark Horizons: Lore was originally Battletech:Lore till we were told we couldn't do it no matter what.

There may have been more to the story but thats what I got told on the topic.

FASA voluntarily went out of business and WizKids bought the IP - and proceeded to make it absolutely dumb, not unlike what happened when the MechWarrior series changed from Activision to some toy company then to Microsoft.

And like MaxGaming's project, my project started out Battletech related, not a good idea.

Ahhh! The controls annoyed me so much, the jump was to big. Im not trying to be negitive but you need to look at some of the other games controls, study them, then get an idea the my be even clever, but this is ridiculous.
