MAX skin model reset

I made a foolish mistake, and I shall have to painfully backtrack, unless somebody knows the answer to this one:
I was working on a player model, and I wanted to check it would work in game before setting up the proper vertex weights on the skin modifier, so I just expanded the envelopes of all the bones so each vertex had weight, and exported.
Once working in game, I returned to try and set the weights properly, but found I had a SERIOUS problem. Each time I selected vertices to a bone to mark them, the vertices would JUMP across the model (perhaps influenced by all the other bones?) .. I tried deleting the skin modifier and starting over. I tried excluding them all. I tried setting all weight/abs. effect to zero. I tried down in the lower section "reset all" and I tried going into the editable mesh and setting all vertex weights to zero - .. each time when I came back to paint weights onto the vertices, they jumped across the model.
Is there any way to reset this hidden effect?
