How to change from one to another level in my game?

by Bernd Schaumburg · in Torque Game Engine · 01/21/2005 (4:59 am) · 17 replies

Hi all..
I'm really new here and my brother and me are working on a project coming from another
3D engine. Now I'm looking around in TGE forums but can't find any advise about how to
come from one to the other level in our game.
Can anybody give us an a little help ?
Regards
Bernd

What sort of file formats are you trying to convert between?

Hi Ben...
it's because we are coming from an another 3D engine, in which we have to name it " change _level " .
For this reason I wrote this down here. Maybe of my bad english.
But I try to find out how it's possible to come from one scene (part of our game) to the next scene.
Regards
Bernd

If I remember correctly, there are a couple of threads/resources floating about that discuss using triggers to move from one mission to another. If you want your player to stay in the same mission, but simply move to a different location (teleport), try searching here on "teleport" and you should find an answer at least somewhat quickly.

If you are looking for actually changing missions when the trigger is hit, try searching through the resources for "trigger" and "change mission" or something similar.

Interestingly, this topic is being discussed in another thread, and that thread also has a link to the resource I mentioned:

Thread about changing mission files via trigger/player action.

Check it out, it's exactly on point for your question!

Plus I already answered it in another thread ... a lot of cross posting these days :-).

Ye agree with Stephen and Dirk :)
Most questions already has an answer in the forums.
Sometimes its really frustrating to answer same question 5 times or try to link to the right thread.
But maybe i did this to when i was new :)

I'm still new, been here two months. When I first joined I read the script manual. Then I picked out a few forums that seemed relevant to my interests and spent a week going through them thread by thread. You don't have to be a Torque expert to figure out how to use a forum.

On the other hand, I still haven't done like Stephen and read the entire engine manual. The size and complexity of that thing is a bit intimidating.

@Eric: heh...I wouldn't say I've read the entire engine documentation, much less actually understand and remember it all, but I did spend a couple of months going through things a couple of hours a day. It just takes time and discipline--it appears to yourself that you aren't accomplishing anything simply by reading and learning organization, but it can be a huge benefit when you actually want to accomplish major functionality--nothing is worse to creative flow for a developer than having to stop every couple of lines of code and search for the place to read how things work. Simply gaining the general knowledge of where to look for things and/or how they work in general can be a serious benefit.

It's especially nice because simply the act of searching through the documentation (especially the graphical interface of the class heirarchy, something I've found extremely useful) can give you ideas about things you didn't even know you didn't know, if you can understand that sentence!

Actually, what's really frustrating is the search capabilities of GG. Over the years it has gotten better, but it's still lacking and can be very difficult to find what you're looking for. Hell, I've been using the site for 2 years now and I still get useless results in my searches.

Isn't there a way to get Google to index your pages without making them public? Just a thought...

Maybe we should all kick in some cash to buy GG a Google Mini

Or maybe save that cash by using the existing google. The public/private issue could be reduced by creating a public indexing page for each private page. An indexing page would have the title of the private page it is pointing to, a keyword list, a brief description, a flag indicating who can read the full page (public, torquesdk, rts...) and a link to the full page (which requires log-in). Such fields already exist for resources (the most important thing to index in my opinion) and could be added to forum threads (the person who creates a thread has a few extra boxes to fill in). With these changes, you can use google searching (just specify that you only want matches from garagegames.com) to find indexes which point to what you really want.

I soon found out that the search funtion is utterly useless, so I kept my own personal library in a simple text file. This works pretty good. I can answer about two thirds of the typical newbie question with one simple search in a plain text document of about ten pages.

Nobody enforce someone to answer to a question !
So I can't understand what someone discuss here, but think about your first days,
when you tried to understand the first steps with TGE.
The problem for the NEW one is, that they don't knew exactly the definitions in TGE,
so they can't knew for what they have to search.
Please forgive me, that I waste your time guys .
And many thanks to them they give me a help !

Bernd, this isn't against you, believe me.

"Du bist der Auslöser, nicht der Anlaß."

[edit]
You are the trigger, not the cause. It just happens that this very question was asked at least ten times by three different parties, which is a mixture of:
- a mystic forum search function
- a huge forum with several very active people
- people cross-posting because they don't know better.

Could have happened to anyone new. Really no pun intended.

Most of us love to give people help .
Nothing of this was aimed at you at all !!
Dont take this personal.
This only happens sometimes in the threads. get used to it :)
But there are no hard feelings ..

@Bernd: As Dirk said, no one is blaming you at all! This has been an issue forever, and again as Dirk mentioned, we're not directing this at you, but at the community itself.

Now, were you able to solve your problem? If not, let us know in that thread if you would, and we'll try to focus on actually answering the question!

Hi all....
many thanks for all of you, who give us that help!
Yes Stephen, we are lucky to solve our problem. Now it's easy and clear, but
first it's so much new for us, that we are " tremble " a little in this jungle.
For sure we will need somebodys help again.
Today I got the book from Kenneth C. Finney, " 3D Game Programming All in One ".
I hope to find some special informations to TGE which we need for our work.
Thanks again and
best Regards
Bernd

Put me on the list for the Google Mini. I'll contribute to that cause!

Setting up a Google Mini for your website? 5K.

Finding the information you're looking for in seconds flat? Priceless.

=)

Incidentally - I am in no way taking any jabs at anyone for asking any questions, redundant or not - I just often finding searching this site for specific info to be laborious. =\
