Where is Torque?

by Denis Nickoleff · in General Discussion · 01/20/2005 (2:51 am) · 10 replies

This seems as good a place as any to ask.. .

I keep hearing that torque can be downloaded and used without buying it, as purchasing gives you access to the source code and the right to sell games. I'd like to use Torque and see what it has to truly offer me, to see what I myself can do with it, before I commit to a purchase, So far the only download I've seen does not allow me to do anything other than run a few examples.

When people say how everyone should download it and see what it has to offer, I assume they reffer to an engine that can be used to make something with. I can't find that anywhere on this site. I found a demo that showed me how great torque is but I haven't seen a download for the engine where I can import my 3d objects, set up lighting, map terrain, make a game.

I'm looking for a Torque engine download that includes a GUI editor, a script editor, etc...

Or am I just misreading everyone and I do need to spend the $100 to be able to do any of that, if that's the case I'll likely go for it but I keep hearing about this free game engine and I can't find it on it's own website.

Can someone please shed some light on this for me?

Just download the demo from the product page (sounds like you've done that already.
You have access to the ingame editors by pressing F11 (Mission Editor) or F10 (Gui Editor).
You won't need a special Script Editor. You can edit the scripts with notepad for example.

I don't know anymore which folders are included in the demo. If there's a folder called starter.fps you can start that "mod" instead of the demo. just go into main.cs and change the line usermod = "demo"; to usermod = "starter.fps"; (it's on the first lines of this file.

And No, you don't have to pay as long as you don't need the source code. You can do alot with Scripting. But many resources on this side require some engine changes. So if you want to use such resources you have to buy it.

The demo is more than just a feature walkthrough with a game thrown in. You can edit the .cs files with a text editor, access several development tools by pressing the 'F11' key and swap the assets used.

Although you won't have access to the core Torque documentation without purchasing a license, you can still refer to third party docs and create a fully functioning game with that demo. Check the Torque SDK home page for links to internal and external documentation.

You could not distribute anything you created without purchasing a license, but you could still use it to learn the basics.

3D Game Programming All In One by Kenneth Finney includes a precompiled version of TGE and walks you through the process of creating a game, and includes all the software you need to do so (some of which requires a licensing or registration fee for long term use).

It costs somewhere between $30 and $50, depending on how hard you search and where you live, but it is well worth the investment IMO.

OH ok.. So I had it, it was just hiding on me. Ok Cool. Thank you very much for letting me know. I was expecting the game engine to be larger than 8 megs. Like 50 megs at least. I don't have too much of an understanding of how it all works. But I will. OOOOOH YYYEEEESSSSS *buys book*

Yeah I was surprised by the size too. when you get right down to it though, its just code. Almost all size is music, models, textures etc...

I remember when I got leasure suit larry 3 for my 8088. It came on something like 11 5.25 inch disks and I thought that was insane. Now I can download that game in 8 seconds.

I think I just depressed myself

In fact this is a question everyone has when having a first look at TGE. I recommend to the GG staff to put the answer to it somewhere prominent in the FAQ.

LOL @ Burning

That was funny

You should start a thread under that name "Useless Information" and everyone can visit it when they have something useless they want to share. I bet it would be the funniest all time thread here.

I'd play. :-D

It was already mentioned, but it's worth emphasizing, that even if you don't need the source code, there's still plenty of reasons to buy the $100 license, including:

- access to member developer forums that are currently hidden from you
- access to the full documentation
- eula ability to publish and sell your modded game
- support of GG
- and the l33tness of being a member of something other than the Princess Leia Golden Bikini Fan Club, to name a few
