IGC 2005 Dates?
by Jeff Leigh · in General Discussion · 01/19/2005 (9:23 pm) · 70 replies
I know this might be a bit early for some to be thinking about but are there any tentative dates (month? dates?) for IGC 2005?
I've got several customers that are targeting the October time frame for project deliverables and I have influence on those targets to clear the way for my going to IGC this year if I can ball park some dates.

One thing to note, It's about a 5h drive from Seattle to eugene. But Amtrak runs right through eugene. If you take the train it's about $40-50 round trip (from seattle) and it only takes 6h. The drive is aweful, i've done it several times, next time I'll be taking the train and using that travel time to do something productive even if it's just reading a book.

One question. Do you have to tell someone if and what you want to showoff? Or do you just kinda steal a coputer and set up on it? Can you bring your own system?

I plan on going... But its a round-trip 70 Hour drive (No point in going if you dont drive).... I dont know if I can afford to pay reg, hotel, and most expensively gas.... I'm coming from Ontario... Maybe it's to early, but would anyone possibly interested in hitching a ride? One question. Do you have to tell someone if and what you want to showoff? You don't have to inform anyone ahead of time though if you want some press coverage prior to the show it is a good idea. There has been talk of having a demo disc this year which would require you to submit a few weeks ahead of time but that definitely isn't solid.

Typically you set up your demo on all of the computers in the Show Off Center (something like 30 computers) so that people have maximum opportunity to play your game. If you want to do exclusive demos (where you are there) then you can snag a single machine every now and again (a few people do this). Bringing your own system would probably not work out well unless it is a laptop...there simply isn't room in the Show Off Center and setting up elsewhere can be problematic. Also no way to ensure the safety/security of your system unless you sit with it the whole time (missing the excellent sessions). You don't have to inform anyone ahead of time though if you want some press coverage prior to the show it is a good idea. Well, I for one plan on bringing a laptop with me to demo off my wares. Does anyone else have the same idea?

When we 'pay' to register, what exactly are we paying for?
Are we paying for the speeches? A booth or table to demo at? Security to watch our machines?
Since many of us are traveling from other parts of the world, life California, Canada, New York, or maybe even england, etc. etc, will there be a telephone number lost travelers can phone into for directions.
Will there be any personnel to solve questions for developers to want to demo at a booth. Or should a question arise where someone wants to know if a developer has paid his attendence fee or not, someone will be available to answer questions!

The latest comments on this thread prompts me to ask some more questions. When we 'pay' to register, what exactly are we paying for?

There are maps and directions available on the IGC website. Eugene is a fairly small city and it is easy to navigate. Worst case you can call the GG office up until the conference starts (after that there usually isn't anyone there).
There aren't any booths. As mentioned above there is a Showoff Center with computers set up so that you can install your demo on them and people can wander by and try it out.
This is half of the Showoff Center:

The other half:

The Showoff Center is just curtained off from the rest of the hall:

and when there are sessions the main hall gets curtained off into three sections:

This conference is *very* small compared to GDC or E3.

You are paying for meals (lunch and dinner), for the sessions, and to help offset the cost of GG renting the hall and the computer equipment needed to run IGC. There is no security besides a couple people watching the front door to give people their information packets and badges which is why it isn't recommended that you bring and leave out your own machine unless you are going to watch it yourself. There are maps and directions available on the IGC website. So then how do you go about installing ? Show up early? Grab random computers and start installing?

Lol... Well I really don't want to go that far... 18 hour drive for 3 days... can't really get that much time off work, or it'd be a possibility. Plus with gas prices so high their probalby isn't much price difference in driving than flying :)Best of luck to you though
