Starting out...

Well, I've got an idea for a game.... *waits for gasps of suprise to die down*...

Problem is that, well, I have no clue how to start this thing out. I've spoken to a few friends that have and are developing games of their own and they've told me to start with a "plan" though they weren't too terribly specific on what that "plan" should entail.

Anyhow, where do I start? How do I turn my deris--- erm vision into a playable game?

While I've had some college, I'm only learned in HTML at this point so pretty much everything will be researching from scratch and finding those actually willing to help from time to time.

Any help would be appreciated.

The first step is to decide what role you will play in making games. Options include programming, scripting, designing, modeling, music, mapping, and probably some others that I forgot. All of these are very hard to do, so I recommend choosing only one and trying to master the skill. The next step depends on which specialty you chose, but I'm going to make a guess.

The focus on your vision suggests that you want to be a designer. A designer lays out the groundwork of ideas that other game developers will follow. The problem is that you need to be already good at designing before anyone would consider following your ideas, so it's hard to join a team as a designer to get your experience. I recommend, instead, to choose one of the other specialties, find a team to join, and start contributing. The experience you get from working on a decent team will help you as a designer, even if you aren't actually doing much design work.

There is actually a forum category called "game ideas." Starting or joining appropriate discussions in that forum is a good way to practice your design skills.

That is my developer journal. Starting at August 23 (Plex Levels) I talk about how to design a game (although I'm aiming towards an RPG, which is probably too complex for you to start with...) If you find the Plex Levels entry dauntingly theoretical, skip to the next entry which is more straightforward.
