Compilation (Sound) problems - OS X
by Luis Commins · in Torque Game Engine · 01/09/2005 (5:19 pm) · 27 replies
Hiya,
Ok, I guess a few are still having sound issues (yep, I've gone through several forum searches, recompiled, recreated and reeverything). My issue is that I cannot get it to compile and run properly (when it does with the 'fixes', most of the times it will not compile) so it just hangs there, like an invisible app (I get a pull down menu, but it doesn't quit...). And the error that is presented is 'THE' Vorbis error, and some variants of. Which on initial inspection appeared to have incomplete Vorbis frameworks.
I've even tried converting the project to Native (running XCode 1.5 on OS X 10.3.7) with all the suggestions.
I've even recreated the Vorbis framework from fresh downloads off the Vorbis site.
Nada, Zilch.
I CAN run the demo that's included, without audio of course, but that's not the point.
Seeing some of the posts I can see that these issues are STILL unresolved.
This needs to be sorted out pronto. I want to deploy to multiple platforms and develop on the Mac and the way things are looking that seems like a no-no.
I've just forked out $100, which is a lot for me, on something I cannot even begin to use.
Every day that passes I hope to see a simple 'doh!' solution, but there hasn't been one.
If the next release fixes this, I'm willing to wait. If the next release is over a month away, I will not wait.
Cheers,
Luis.

It would be wonderful if he can get some feedback for those with this issue to see if it resolved the problem, or if you can provide detailed information on what still may not be working.
The issue isn't extremely prevalent (most Mac users have sound after at most a few ranlib issues), but it is one that I know he'd like to get rid of for good.

Just as an update, Josh mentioned in an different post that the pre-release 1.4 Mac build should be available sometime next week.It would be wonderful if he can get some feedback for those with this issue to see if it resolved the problem, or if you can provide detailed information on what still may not be working.

duh, it's where it said "macintosh" under computers!!!;)
we don't run winblows, so we obviously don't know shirt about computers!!!;) MACS can't use a multi-button mouse, and 98 is more than 10, duh!!!;) billg roooolz!!!;) resistance is futile!!!;)
seriously, the pre-release update next week is almost in time to help. maybe i should have started "whining" (i though 'wine' was a WINDOWS emulator? coincidence? i think not!) weeks ago. then maybe my deadline would not be in pieces.
here's your new car! have fun! we'll get the brakes figured out next week or two. just don't drive fast, or on hills, or park it and get out! and after that, we'll figure out the tires!
btw, i have never loaded FFMPEGX and the only problem i had with sound-related things on compile was talked about in these here forums. i read an awful lot of postings looking for something to help with various problems over the last 6 months. i don't have sound, of course, but i didn't expect to, so i'm not going to 'whine' about it.
the problem i had was with basic finder-level stuff that was standard in the windows version but which grenaded on the mac. i asked nicely, got various responses amounting to being mooned and told to shut up and fix it myself, and a month later after posting again hoping for something useful was yelled at for not asking nicely. WTF???
if this is whining, so be it. i think it's more about not getting what was promised.
i know that on the windows side, everything 'just works' and you don't need to worry about things like security, stability, trojans, viruses, SP2 breaking apps, and helping the richest man ever stay that way by drinking his Kool-Aid.
on second thought, maybe the mac isn't so bad after all.

By the way: Where is it in the blurb, together with the minimum specs, that you need a coder breathing over your shoulder?

Would you list these other packages which have broken most everyone else's dev environment? The implementation of Torque on the Mac is not 100%, as many can testify.
There are other source packages available which do not break. I've tried them. My interest in Torque is borne out of my own reasons: I complain because I like Torque, if it does what it's supposed to. I want to make sure GG doesn't loose sight of he fact that even (even!) us Mac users like things that work.
James: Have a look here - http://homepage.mac.com/major4/
David: 'and 98 is more than 10, duh!!!' Classic, love that line! You've been without sound for 6 months? That ain't right. But stop whinning and start complaining :)
Cheers,
Luis.

Stephen: Inform yourself, read others posts and maybe then you'll see that we are not blaming other applications, they haven't broken Torque: It was like that when we bought it.Would you list these other packages which have broken most everyone else's dev environment? @ all - I understand the frustration of working with software that doesn't quite work as well on the Mac as Windows or. I've had to deal with it most of my working life in this industry (as have many of us). I've also heard the rants before and perhaps it's just the need to vent:
@Luis - 6 months is a long time to wait. I won't (I hope) have to wait that long. But then again, if 1.4 doesn't fix it the problem, perhaps I'll be here ranting too.
@ Josh - do us proud with 1.4 - it's all we ask.

@ Luis - thanks for the link. I don't have this beast installed and misunderstood thinking it was standard in X or something.@ all - I understand the frustration of working with software that doesn't quite work as well on the Mac as Windows or
Quote:I complain because I like Torque, if it does what it's supposed toWell, Torque does for the most part does work, excepting sound of course. If version 1.4 will fix it and that fix is on the horizon, I'll take that for rent and wait.

Marble Blast Gold is now shipping with every new Mac sold. None have sound problems. TGE sound works on the majority of Mac configurations (admittedly, sometimes not without a little effort--and in some cases a lot).
You tell me--when a product works on a vast majority of platform configurations, but you receive reports from a very small sample of your market, what is wrong? The product, or the configuration?
Nevermind, after watching you repeatedly ignore what is said here, I'm just going to let this one go.

@Luis: Josh has answered why TGE sound most probably does not work on your particular configuration, and it has been quoted back to you as well. You are the one that is not listening to other's posts, most specifically the GG employee that works on the Mac ports, so if you refuse to even acknowledge what he tells you, that is your choice, not mine.Marble Blast Gold is now shipping with every new Mac sold. Stephen: 'Josh has answered why TGE sound most probably does not work' - Important words there: 'most probably'.
I do not disagree that some of them have not been resolved.
I have been listening, as well as many others, and it is the reason why I am complaining: Regardless of the suggestions, it still does not work on a lot of the installations, or did you not read that David has been without sound for over six months? Do a forum search, see how many still have issues (there's another complaint there btw, the site search funcion is a bit pants).
Marble Blast Gold, sure, which version of OpenAL are they shipping it with? Must be that brand spanking new one, just like the Windows version...
I do not care whether you view me as a 'small sample', really.
'repeatedly ignore what is said here'... Hmmm, I seem to recall replying to all your posts in this thread... Something's not quite right there.
James: No problemo.
Cheers,
Luis.

Torque 3D Owner James
I'm a Mac user and not as whining as most. I think it's great that we have a f**king game development engine like Torque on the Mac at all! I personally can wait for 1.4. Really!
BUT - what the hell is FFMPEGX and where can I kill it!?
Keep up the good work guys. It ain't easy doing multiplatform apps. I know. It's what I do for a living too and have done for the past 12 years.
Thanks and keep up the good work ")
