Zap spammer/flooder

by Joshua Dallman · in General Game Discussion · 12/14/2004 (1:24 pm) · 19 replies

Someone was spamming/flooding inside zap today the message "this is gay" continuously
any other text or game messages would disappear immediately because of the flood
it was really distracting and lame

He is back, same server, TWPsycadelic, as "------------cneal", now spamming about 12 lines of stuff really fast. For a lot of other multiplayer games, you can simply find another server. For a game with 15 or so people on at any given time, its usually on one server. So in order to play this game during these times, you have to put up with these sorts of people. It's like poison for a game with a small crowd. SOMETHING needs to be done..

Dipshit protection will be in the next build.

That's probably the coolest response from a developer in response to a problem I think i've ever seen.

Hmm
I'll see if I can look up his IP and block him.
Sorry, been busy today with other stuff but I'll do what I can

edit: couldn't scroll up far enough and the window wasn't logged. if it happens again, feel free to AIM me at Psycadelc and I'll do what I can

Here's his IP: 66.27.83.32:1851

If you figure out how to IP ban let me know.

Added
ALL: 66.27.83.32
to my hosts.deny

edit: not sure that zap checks hosts.deny :(
edit2: i'm going to set up IP tables sometime tomorrow to block (unless of course the dipshit support comes out tomorrow)

There is a high probability that beta 2 will come out today.

Will the beta2 server include banning capabilities?

What we need is console ability...

This version of Zap has no console/scripting at all. It is not our plan for Zap to be this way forever.

Probably has a dynamic IP, as is the norm for home broadband connections. His re-arrival brings up an interesting point though, perhaps there should be some sort of player voting system, so that there is way for normal players to remove the troublemakers should an admin not be around? (This is sort of a 'wishful thinking' feature, I know, but it sure would be nice! Another good reason for modding capabilities perhaps? :D )

You know, one way around this spamming asshole is to use voice chat to communicate with your team. Anyway, @ Pat. This is a great game already, and I think that the fact that you guys are adding "dipshit protection" (awesome way to put it btw) is excellent. Can't wait to register. Thanks! :3

Not sure if it was you Richard "Rick" but nice work booting that guy the second he joined!!

We were having some good games, good to see they didn't get ruined by that spammer!
