Free art resources at Games Extract

I made a .plan about this, but I wanted to give a shout to the people who don't read the .plans.
I just went live with my site, Games Extract. It's a resource that has free art assets to download. Up right now is a pretty big selection of textures, skyboxes, and a couple of tutorials on texture creation. This is a constantly expanding project, though... in the near future I'll be adding 3d props, base figures, and 3d related tutorials.
So go check it out!

Hey Adam, very cool stuff. I liked the tutorial.. I actually understood it, which is saying something, since I'm about the most artistically disinclined person in the world.Nice job. I dug the.. verbage.. in certain places too. Helped keep me interested. :)

Im not sure I know what you are talking about. Mind replying or sending an email describing the process? If there is one thing I love it's learning new tricks.
@Josh
Thanks a lot... that was my plan so its nice to know that it worked.

btw, your tutorial helped me out, I was making seamless textures in my own backwards way and I think with a few photoshop macros, your way will be a lot easier.

Sure thing I read an article about it in game developer magazine a while ago I think....in fact here it is!:www.gamasutra.com/features/20010523/hajba_pfv.htm

Are you going to be posting other people's stuff too, or are you just posting your own art?
The reason I ask is because I think a site giving out free art resources for games is an incredible thing.
I'm not an artist, but I do have a digital camera. When I get my new computer (which should have a USB port which actually works) in January, I can start taking pictures of miscellaneous objects. The pictures alone aren't good, but an artist could make them into something good without much work.
Or, at least, I think it works that way. I'm not entirely sure. But I'd be happy to send you digital photos as a sort of "concept" art if you're interested. I have 3 images now, but I won't be able to take more pictures until I get a new computer.

Maybe you should try to work with the people from digital boneyard.Are you going to be posting other people's stuff too, or are you just posting your own art?

Heh, i think in your tutorials you should also put in tutorials to make the free textures. That way your passing on the knowledge and people can add their own look to it easily too ;)

@Steven
The digital boneyard idea has been suggested before... and may I say its a damn good one. At very least im going to be submitting my work to them as well as to GameBeavers. This week has been INSANE with the amount of stuff thats been happening, so Im looking to get to submissions next week.
As far as having other people post, im still juggling back and forth on that. The idea of the site started because I had work of my own that I wanted to distribute, so I designed the site with that in mind. In order to be able to distribute other peoples work, Id either have to rebuild the existing sections in php or design a new section for other work. Creating a new section is a little more viable for me, because Games Extract is very much part of my portfolio; being able to have a hard line between my stuff and everyone elses is necessary so an propsepctive employer or what have you probably wont have the time to search the entirety of my site.
If I do create that new section, it wont be for some time since it would be a rather large undertaking. In the mean time, though, Im completely open to accepting work such as photos via email to use as source imagery. When I take pictures, I know exactly why Im taking them. To get a shot from someone else would be pretty cool cause I imagine I could write up some pretty good tutorials with "foreign" content.
@ Jacob
Im not sure I quite understand what you are suggesting. Right now, I do discuss the exact process I used to make every texture on the site. Are you suggesting I release the psds of my free textures as well as the final jpg version? Or am I missing it entirely?

Thanks for the compliments. :)@Steven

I was saying to have to texture and also have instructions on how to make it yourself as well. I didn't notice that anywhere on the site and thought it would be a nice addition, that way you can make it yourself and change things where you'd rather have em changed, ya know? ;)

You're right - it would be alot of work. Right now, your site is almost like a showcase of some of the art you can do. So it's almost like an online resume. Letting people use your art could be a sort of "bonus" for game devs who go to your site.
It will probably keep some people coming back to your site, and it may generate some business in the form of people offering you money to do art for them.

you should add a tutorial about using a highpass filter to get rid of the patterns some of the patterns / lighting problems. I find that trick pretty useful.
