To Mod or Not to Mod?

by James "Neo" D · in General Discussion · 11/02/2001 (5:07 am) · 3 replies

Hello,

I am interested in game development but am holding out for the new Java Game API(Look in the programing forum on on my plan).

But I also know I need to develop my design chops and find myself in a minor dilemma?

Should I download Wild Tangent or one of the other open source dev engines, or develop a mod for "Deus-Ex"?

Which is a better way to work on design in your opinions, build from scratch or do mods?

(Why do I fear this is gonna go "Down The Middle"!)

well if you are new to programming games /mods imo the best way to learn is by moding a populargame already into full swing like tribes2,quakes1/2/3,halflife,ect.

that way there are a ton of home grown tutorials already outthat you can learn alot from.

if you are not new to programming c and c++ and want to start from scratch the torque engine annd hanging around these forums would be a good way to go.

I agree with Gary, if you are new to game development then I would definitely recommend getting a copy of Quake III or Unreal Tournament and developing a Mod.

Doing this enables you to develop a lot of the skills required for game development without the inevitable frustration involved in working with an engine such as Torque.

That being said, Torque is great in that you can play around with the scripting system until you have built up the skills necessary to go on and modify the engine itself. As Torque is effectivly a stripped version of Tribes II there is also a fair amount of resources on scripting around.

Hope this helps, if not send me an email.

2 Votes so far for a mod!

If this mod goes well I may pick up Torque and see about playing around with that!

My profile lists details of the mod(which may change).
