DirectX 9.0 SDK Update - (October 2004)

by Sam3d · in Torque Game Engine · 10/28/2004 (7:43 am) · 10 replies

Is anyone using VS6 and DirectX 9.0 SDK Update - (October 2004)?

Would it cause compile problems with TGE?

No compile problems so far if you download the EXTRAS pack. If you don't then you will have a load of errors with VC6.

My TSE lags terribly when using the Oct update, though.

@Stefan
Where is the extras pack? I was able to find the October DirectX SDK download. Thanks

Ugh... VC6 :(

Eric - extras heremsdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/directx.asp

ben - yup, but it's all I have. Tried the Express version of V-net, but it always crashes.

I'm only asking because I wanted to compare CrystalSpace to TSE, and CS seems to require Oct Update but I
don't want to screw up ability to compile TGE.

Soon support for VC6 will be dropped entirely from the DX9 SDK. It's time to upgrade folks.

TGE and TSE do still compile under VC6 - Brian does all his dev work under VC6.

But VC6 is going away - even if we at GG want to keep supporting it - because Microsoft is slowly dropping support for it.

(Nevermind that VC6 has such abysmal template support that we're beginning to actually be limited by its flaws in those areas...)

TSE has been compiled against the most recent DX9 updates... if you have more troubles with DX you might want to check out the DirectX-Dev mailing list. They have a lot of good insight.

Re Upgrade... pricey stuff.

Is VS .NET 2003 good enough, or go to .net 2004 ?

Does .net 2004 still have the optimizer that VS6 Pro had?

I use 2005 Express beta.

The new Microsoft compilers are basically superior to VC6 in every way. The only thing to watch out for is that they like to sell cheap versions with no optimizer at all. If you get the same "level" product, you shouldn't be losing any features.

If you're really bothered, you can always get a GCC based solution. Free and pretty good.
