Another Model Pack?

by Michael B. 3D Outrage · in General Discussion · 10/27/2004 (7:17 pm) · 14 replies

Hi, My name is Joel Bowen, I am an intermediate modeler using 3D Max as my modeling tool.
I am posting this thread to get some feedback on an idea I had to make some money and to help out game developers who don't have time to hire a 3D modeler to make little things like military weapons when they need them right away.
So I have composed a Model Pack (We are all hearing that word allot) of weapons to see what the need would be for such a pack.
I am not a part of any paying jobs at the moment, so this would be my modeling income.

The following weapons pack is only the beginning of more "Model Packs" that I would make for sale if people are fond of the idea.
Here is a picture of my models and a link to the web page on 3DOutrage.com were I am selling it.

So I guess I am asking the same questions as Will Harrison, how many people need this?
Would you buy this?
Is the price right?

Thank You for your time. And Comments.

Also please disregard the mess my web-site is it, I only recently got hosting for it, and have not had time to fix some broken links and spelling errors.

If the models are well built, set up and ready to go, I think the prices you are asking are more than reasonable. I would suggest a wireframe or a free example model. One of the things that keeps me from frequently purchasing models from others is that sometimes you get a model that looks good but is a mess when you open it and look at the actual mesh.

The meshes above appear to be of decent quality, but as a purchaser, I would like to be able to see how one is constructed before plunking down money.

Hope this is helpful to you.. good luck!

Hi Joel,

Interesting concept, I think to do this successfully within the GG community you will need to have them torque ready (ie. exported to dts) and animated.

On a side note with the guns (and dont take offence to this)

its very easy to see that they are just boxy polygonal objects with a phototexture sourced from the internet. Im not sure if this has and copyright infringement/issues

Infact i think i have used the same photo's on a couple of models in the past. which most modellers can whip up in no time at all.

not really sure where I am going with that point exactly but yeah.. just something to think about

I think your main market would be for programmers/developers with little idea about art content looking for some models to quickly prototype with, but they will be replaced in the long run of development with 'real' models

Free weapon models are relatively easy to find. To increase the value of yours, you should consider including the animations with them, and perhaps even the sounds.

A weapon pack could be a hugely successful thing, and we've wanted to see one done for a long time.

Your art looks good, as far as I can tell (though, I'm not an artist at all). If you want, please email me, joshw@garagegames.com and send a preview of your pack (if you don't mind). We can take a look at it then, and maybe get Joe's expert advice.

On the rest, I agree that including weapon animations and / or sounds is a great idea that'd help increase the product's sales a lot. Supporting .DTS is essential as well. Feel free to ask here if you need help figuring out the best way to export your models as DTSs.

Including the TorqueScripts necessary to get appropriate weapon-firing behavior for each kind of gun would be cool too, and if you know how to do sound effects, that's not a bad idea either. All of that stuff would add overhead to your development time, so you'd have to decide if it's worth it to you, but I imagine that getting expert feedback on your meshes, including animations and DTS support, and hopefully some scripts, would help sales a lot. Sounds would be a cool bonus. If you need to hook-up with somebody on how to do scripts in Torque, again, let us know and I bet someone will be willing.

In any case, looks like good work so far. We'd love to see some high-quality weapon packs.

If you need someone to help you with some scripting/coding, I can help you out. da_phatest_sk8er@yahoo.com I could also make some custom C++ stuff for special weapons(ie missile launchers).

I agree with erik... If you make them TGE ready I will buy them!

I need some guns for my game (I made some but i'm no good at skining them or exorting them for TGE)... now someone needs to make a good vechile pack :)

Thanks for your comments, this really helps allot to know what people think about this.

@Josh- I will definitely drop you an e-mail, but I am wanting to improve these models now after hearing what everyone has to say, ad sound like you said, and find an animator who can export to torque.

@Moore- I could use some help with the scripts coding etc. E-mail me and maybe we can work something out.

@Joe- I will post wire frame views of a few of the models for viewing, and maybe post a free downloadable model soon (having hosting issues with that atm).

I am sorry to say even though I have been modeling for a few years now and working on using my models in the Torque engine, I have not perfected the art of exporting and animating them, I usually end up with an item with bounding box problems.

If there are some people who would like to help out to make this pack successful, I would like to take it all the way, sounds animations, the works.

These look great! And $24 is a very reasonable price. Animations, .dts and .3ds, and sound would be a cherry on top of a perfectly good ice-cream sunday. They aren't high poly, but they look it.

They kinda look like souped up (graphic wise) version of Counter-Strike weapons. Very cool....

I agree with George here, this is cool stuff. I would like to buy this pack when/if it comes out.

Please anyone interested in helping me out with this, sound files, scripting, animation's, exporting, any and all help is appreciated, and I would like to assemble a team of a sort of "Pack Producing" type, this should not be the only available pack.

@-all- thank you for you comments and suggestions, one more question, and comment.
Currently the pack includes a skin, a .max model, and a .3ds model. If it was to be put together with .dts, animation's, scripts, and hopefully sound would be nice, what would you suggest that would be a "worth it" price?

E-mail me at CodeDelta16@aol.com with ANY questions or comments, Thank You.

Is there any like bows, and swords weapon pack?

I don't see a need to include scripting in a model pack, or sounds. Make a seperate sounds pack if you want that. Some people may hate the sounds you include and want their own anyway, same for scripts, maybe rate of fire is all wrong etc. KISS.

@ Ralph- I agree but its for the concessus. How about this?
I will try to make the models even better, if there is a texture artist out there who would like to make some good textures multi sided and all for this pack we can ad value to it, we could even include a blank template texture for each one. This will help its value, and also I want to ad animation's. But I could make a "script and sounds pack" eventually, and that can be available if you want it for a small price (suggestions?).

I will continue to sell the pack on my web site in 3ds and max with posted updates as they come, and hopefully down the road sell it with GG that would really be nice.

Here is a bow I made, its not much but it comes totally textured if you're interested.
361 polies, that might be high for what you're looking for.

-EDIT: @ all- Looks like animation's, and the exported file will be available soon. Will update here and on my website keep checking back. Thanks and please keep giving me your suggestions, that's what motivates me to do this; Feedback.
