The TSE; how will it affect TGE?

by Kyle Le Master · in Torque Game Engine · 10/21/2004 (3:28 am) · 8 replies

Hey everyone. I just wanted to quickly express a small concern of mine.

I am curious as to if the TGE will continue to be updated and and supported or if it will be completely replaced by TSE. Also, if TGE and TSE are developed contingently, will updates on TGE be much fewer? I really would have no problem upgrading to TSE and I think it's a wonderful product, my only concern is the boosted system specs. I know that they are still low, and that is a great thing, but I want anyone on any level of PC able to play the game I am currently developing (in fact my main goal is to keep it running on my friends 450mhz Pent 2 machine).

The truth is, although the shaders look great, with the Synapse Lighting Pack and content that this set to the high standards of Tim Aste's newest works, TGE looks great for me.

If anyone has anything to add feel free to. Looking forward to a response!

I also wanted to say really quick that Garage Games has the best game making community ever! You guys are awesome! I hope to contribute more to the community in the near future (as I am still a newb).

Thanks in advance.

GarageGames staff has said before that no, they won't stop working with TGE.

Myself, I don't think everyone wants to go over to TSE because of the system requirements and IMO it's more time consuming to work with TSE in some aspects.

I really think there needs to be some kind of automatic FAQ that pops up in your face when people but TSE and TGE in the same sentence...

We will continue working on TGE, mostly making it easier to use. Most of our Friday night presentation at IndieGamesCon was about making Torque into a platform and future plans for the engine.

Well the thing is the community won't let Torque Game Engine (TGE) die just like the Quake 1 and Quake 2 engine communities won't let them die, they're all just to good of game engines to be left to expire so of speak.

So no need to worry about it. :)

I think one of the things that people get confused about is the fact that TSE is a completely new rendering layer on top of TGE. They get caught up in the thought that just because TSE has the neatest newest rendering features, TGE won't inherit the netcode fixes or the general workhorse enhancements that are common between the two.

I think a lot of the problem simply spans from misinformation. I'm not sure where it comes from, but it seems to spread like wildfire.

I still see posts on other sites about how no one can make a commercial game with Torque unless they pay GG $10k to publish it. That's a whole lot of misinformation on a number of levels, but it seems to be almost as prevalent as my vi@gr@ spam.

While I try my best to be a Torque cheerleader, I'm also callous and often inordinately verbose about my thoughts. But I still try. I just need to not comment in topics like "Torque or Jamagic?".

Blake - I feel your pain.

Many have asked me, so what is the catch for such a powerful engine being priced the way GG has with Torque. We wanted to revolutionize pricing for a AAA game engine because we don't believe that should be the barrier to making a game.

It boils down to if people don't want to understand our mission, they will believe whatever mis-information is out there - those that want to make a fun game with a proven engine that ships top quality games and is future proofed will consider TGE as a possible resource. Now literally thousands of developers who do want to make games have discovered TGE and are contributing back as they can. My answer is now when asked, 'so what is the catch' is designers/developers have the tools the pros do, but they still have to make a fun game.

As Jeff said we're not just committed long term to TGE, but a majority of our efforts are still concentrated on the development of this technology base.

Thanks for all of the information guys! I guess I sorta didn't think of how TSE is more TGE with the shaders (and some other enhancments). Sorry again for the silly question but at least this post is out there for others.

Thanks again for the great work you guys are doing and I know it's obvious that, with the price Torque is, that Garage Games is committed to games rather then money. That is what sets this community apart.

I don't think that was a silly question. Actually I was about to ask it myself, then you asked it and now I can pretend I already knew it :-).

As a sidenote, I hope the Garagegames people are commited to money as much as to games, because I like them, and want them to hang around much more (anticipating they have to pay rents and stuff), so the business model better be right.
