Dark Horizons: Lore review...

Just thought I would post my thoughts on the game after playing the demo.
AAA+ is what I think! I'm typically an expert at bashing games especially war games such as Battlefield Vietnam etc. But I've also played every mechwarrior game to come down the pipeline from the original.
The demo itself is nice sort of a battletech meets the fast and the furious. Customizable Mav's and quick balance vs speed bar to select from makes changing setups fast so you don't lose play time.
Although I tried because I'm a prick and should probably be a game critic for a living I didn't find any bugs. I only found one thing which was semi-annoying. When changing directions while strafing for example from left to right it needs two keys presses. Or perhaps I was simply pressing the other direction before I let off the other button.
I quickly adjusted to it though and had a blast blasting things. I really enjoyed the challenge of the game as well as the transition from the various MAV's although I didn't get a chance to try them all. I'll have to wait till I've ordered the full version to do that which I am planning to do.
Definitely takes a steady hand to properly lead your targets, and the game consisted of a lot more than just robots running around. Turrets, tanks, and probably a lot more things I didn't get a chance to see or try yet.
The levels I though were excellent graphically and layout wise. If nothing else the game was a real encouragement for me to move my project to the Torque engine.
Difficulty wise overall I rate this one more up there with flight simulators than FPS. While controlling the MAV is very easy to grasp effectively operating it is a whole nother story. Spray and pray simply won't do on this one.
I also found it a very nice deal that I could actually type a message to other players WHILE still controlling my MAV. As a whole package intro, music, load time, etc. I think it was superb. It didn't take but a few minutes to be signed up and logged on blasting at people.
Hopefully next payday I can order the full version, do some truely serious playtesting, and then do a full review. This is just a first impression which I must say was a very good impression.
My system spec's are:
Intel 2.4b Northwood
512mb memory
128mb Radeon 9800
Cable internet connection
The game ran smoothly and without a hitch. Talking with other players in the same area as me online they were running 56K and kicking my tail. Which tells me that the game still manages to run smoothly even on a phone line connection.
Oh yeah game graphics on a whole were very well done. Especially the particle effects on the various weapons, MAV's, etc. Were just right IMHO which to me really inhanced the tension during battles with the particle trails wizzing by all around you. The MAV's themselves looked very nice as well as I notice when ramming into my opponents lol.
The most important thing I think is I had a lot of fun. I'm sure the more I play the funner it will get as well. So I'll probably sit at work all day tomorrow just waiting to get home to play some more.
Anyway it's bedtime now 10:00pm work at 4:00am so gotta jet. Anyway if you haven't tried it out yet definitely grab the demo. It's free and offers a lot of fun compared to the standard 1-3 level buggy demo's of large company commercial games I have played.

Players really do drive buzz and its great that even held to the quality stadards of big budget AAA titles self-funded Lore and and the ever expanding quality of Torque are proving themselves worthy of good reviews. Yes, I'm starting to think its close to time to get the review copies ready to ship...

Between the raves that MavLympics players had competing in that mod, reviews from self-proclaimed jaded gamers like Zen_Budha here and the upcoming DH: Lore 1.3 preview going toward gold the entire MaxGaming team can take pride in a game that is living up to its full potential and beginning to get the buzz it deserves. The passion and sacrifices are worth it when players are having as kick ass a time playing Lore as they have recently.Players really do drive buzz and its great that even held to the quality stadards of big budget AAA titles self-funded Lore and and the ever expanding quality of Torque are proving themselves worthy of good reviews. I think that is one of the biggest issues with online games. You really need a player base as soon as it's on the shelves. I mean if it's multiplayer only and they hop online to see 4 servers 2 empty with 4 people on one of them. No matter how fun the game is it's not as fun as one with a full house so to speak.
Plus it's a common fact that for every person you make happy they will only tell 3 people. For every person you make mad they will tell everyone they meet. So I make it a measure to always spread good news, and let bad news die.

Lol although I felt compelled to do so I also posted my review on a bunch of other forums I hang out on. I figure if I enjoy it so will they, and a game is always funner when the server is packed than vacant.I think that is one of the biggest issues with online games.
