What to do?

Alright, this is the first place I thought of going to for help. I'm an aspiring game developer, currently at the age of 16. I've been reading Kenith Finneys book, and at first I was compeltley immersed in it. I read for 6 hours a day atleast and programmed. Then it all stopped,(namley due to losing my compiler) and even though I now have Visual stuido C++ (provided via my C++ class at school). It bothers me that I'm slacking off, but I just dont have "drive" anymore. I was wondering if anyone else could atleast give me some help or support as to why I should persue this goal closley. I've got 2 more years of highschool left and I've wanted to develop games since I was 14. I've just lost all the drive as I stated...

Please help if you can, it will be greatly appreciated. Also, sorry if this is in the wrong forum area...

Thank you,
Daniel Hannigan

I have an indie game dev project "in the oven" and there was definitely a burst of enthusiasm at the beginning where the game was all I could think about, I was completely immersed in its development. But after a while it started to slow down and I started to get less excited about it. What turned me around though was every time I'd get a new piece of concept art back, or 3d model screenshot, or have a meeting with a consultant. Every time one of those things happened my drive to get the game out there was restored.

As I was starting to piece together the credits for the game, I realized to my surprise there are over a dozen people involved in the creation of "my" game. What I'm saying is that it sounds like maybe you're a bit isolated -- game dev doesn't happen in a basement with one person, a computer, a compiler, and a book. It takes other people not simply for assets but to lend creative energy to the project to push it forward. Making a game is a big, heavy boulder, and it takes a lot of people's momentum to get that boulder moving.

So look around for a group of like minded folk and get involved with a project you can be excited about contributing to, even if you mostly just watch and learn. There's nothing better for setting aflame your own passion than the passion of others in a supportive community.

Good luck.

Alright! You are very right on that... Actually a few of my friends could help. One's a fantastic artist and musician, another actually has great skill in models, I'm good with photoshop and code and almost all of it, and another friend is great at story's and wants to be my apprentice in programming...You are very very right Joshua... Thank you a ton.

HOpefully I can get all o' us crazy guys together...and make some twisted piece of work. Oh! Does anyone know where I could get some good 2d resources, preferably free. Such as some tutorials, engine, graphic things...the like.

Shoot man, you're lucky to have the friends you do -- I have to pay for all the help I'm getting! Hopefully they'll be interested, and if not you'll just have to go make some new friends :)

There's a couple of threads on 2d stuff -- most notably, there's going to be a "Torque 2D" (T2D) pack out in a couple of months, you can take a peek at the development of it here.

There's also a similar current thread on 2d game dev resources here. 2d seems to be making a comeback...

Thanks!

I am pretty appreciative of good friends like that, and I never realized how good I might have it.

Anyway, I'll look into the 2d stuff more. I think that since i love RTS and such..maybe I could try and produce some ugly monster of a RTS for fun...perferably in 2d :D

Thanks again,

I'm pretty isolated i think only one of my friends are good with computers and 2 others are musical but i don't think they would be interested in making a game thats i've i've kind of learn a little of everything HTML,Javascript, flash (i can do some quite advanced actionscript),java(only simple stuff) and music (music is definately my specialty) and i'm starting to learn c++ although i'm learning on my own

do u think think i'm learning quite late i'm 19 at the moment and doing a HND in software engineering and after that i'm thinking of doing a BSC in either games development or computer graphics and 3d modeling

the only trouble is i can't draw to save me life but i'm starting to learn and getting a hell of alot better my best used to be a stick man now i can draw japanese cartoon looking charaters

what do you think do you reckon i'm getting into this stuff to late

Well, Seeing as how I'm only 16. I'd have to say your not in it too late. Its just the time you chose to come in. So long as your working at it and seeing progress I find nothing wrong with what your doing, no matter what the time frame is.

Just as long as you dont get disencouraged due to time I beleive you should be alright.

Thats all I can really say at the moment.

Good luck,

Hi Daniel, if you had created some games in flash... may be you can consider publish them at Pycomall.com to get some pocket money :)
