Help for newbs
by Zach Laster · in General Discussion · 08/31/2004 (11:00 am) · 14 replies
Hi, I'm completely new here and, for that matter, new to internet gaming communities of this size and sort. Thus I'm missing alot of ideas here.
For instance, I'm missing a few terms.
What does indie mean? I keep seeing it but I completly miss it every time.
And, in the Description drop-down box, does 'Available for Contracting' mean 'Available for Odd-jobs'?
Thanks!

I'll refrain from posting personal things here. I was intending to have this as reference for newbs who need the terminology.
So, anyone willing to give helpful tips on anything to the newbs, do it here.

That's actually not a dumb question. I heard a lawyer who was asked what an indie film is, and she said it's a movie made in India -- you know, Bollywood. Doh!

Indie means independent. In other words, not pro.

Indie means we are in control of our products and our work. We are not bound by the same restrictions as other game development studios who follow the plans/demands of the big publishers. We make our games our way.

Indie does not necessarily mean not pro. The guys at Garage Games and BraveTree are indie and are obviously professional game developers, as are a lot of guys in this community.Indie means we are in control of our products and our work. We are not bound by the same restrictions as other game development studios who follow the plans/demands of the big publishers. We make our games our way.

That is not the commonly accepted definition. What you are describing is the word "amateur."

When it comes to indie music or bands, indie film and indie games your definitions as well as milage may vary. While independent game developer is used very loosely in this industry where Valve and Id are considered independent and have some good cause for considering themselves such - there are some characteristics that we believe come with the territory like being self-funded as well as having autonomy and creative control over the games you make is key to earning the proud badge of 'indie', in addition we also believe that owning your own IP is part of the equation.
