Reselling?

by Stefan Geiger · in Torque Game Engine · 08/31/2004 (3:39 am) · 75 replies

I made some very interesting changes to the Torque Game Engine.
So, may I resell these changes to a licensee of the Torque Game Engine?

Yes, you can, but I'm not sure what the details are for selling it. Someone else will probably give you an answer any minute ;)

Thats pretty much what the Synapse lighting pack is, interesting changes to the engine.

All depends if there is a demand for what you have done.

If there is anybody who'd buy it, is another story.
But I'm wondering if the Torque License allows it to me.

Yes, as far as I know, you can.

What "very interesting changes" have you made?

The stipulation I believe is that what you sell needs to not contain any significant amount of original Torque source, so it would need to be a patch or source files with your code accompanied by instructions on how to integrate them into the engine.

I'm sure a GG representative would be happy to elaborate if you contact them, or if they happen to scan this thread eventually.

@Banshee:
I added a complete new Rendering System, supporting the latest DX9 and OGL effects and rendering realtime dynamic shadows (Shadow Volumes, ShadowMaps) . As well, I added a powerfull materialsystem, supporting Per-Pixel Lighting, procedural shader generation, importing HLSL, GLSL, CG as well as ASM Shaders and many other features.
In addition I redesigned the structure of the engine to separate the engine-code from the game-code and to make a really easy to use interface.

So, I think there would be some guys out there, beeing interested in buying a license to these changes.

@Luke D
I just wrote an e-mail to one of the GG representatives.

I am also interested but how much would you sell it for? And are you selling a whole new engine or just an upgrade becasue I already have Torque and would hate to have to buy it all over agian.

I would offer it(it the License allows it) in three different version.
The first contains only the headers and dlls/so/bundles to create freeware games, which I'll "sell" for free. The second contains the same files, but with the right to sell the product. This would cost probably something around 500$-5000$, depending on the product.
The third contains the while source code, including the right to sell the product. The cost for this version is absolutely not set yet.
For all of these, you definitly need to be a Torque Licensee because of the Torque License.

Lets see some screenshots of these new improvements in action, then we can decide on a price...

I want to sell DaveTorque. It has Half-Life 2 like rendering and cool physics as well as some of the cool pixel shaders and stuff like the Tenebrae engine. I've used WinMerge to merge the TSE codebase into TGE and find/replaced all of the copyright notices to read "This engine was created solely by David Blake, oh, and he didn't use any of the Tenebrae source or the leaked Half-Life 2 and Havok code either so it's all him, baby, cuz he's that good! Copyright (c) 2004 David Blake".

It'll be available to Torque engine licensees soon, as per the license.

That really does sound like TSE minus many other things coming soon. While yours may work perfectly right now, I'm willing to wait another 6 months or so for TSE to save me $4700. Even at your low end of $500, TSE is still a significant savings. Perhaps your skills are better than Bens, Brians, + many more, and in theory worth more. However, with TSE I'm getting the help, support, bug repairs and kind words of the many thousands who will/have bought TSE. Finally, if TSEs path follows anything near TGEs, I know that 90% of the future enhancements will be free.

No-one will pay for that when they can get the TSE for $200 which we all know will have tremendous support and features.
If you have added all those features then well done, but no-one will buy it at those prices and you can't sell your new engine because it's using the torque code base.
You could sell it as an additional pack to TSE users for about $50-$100 and lots of people would buy. Or you could contact garage and see if they will pay to have your code in the TGE code base. Otherwise you will have a nice feature set you can't do anything with.
Or you could just donate it to the community :D

So you merged TSE with TGE and replaced the copyright notices! I think garage may after a little chat with you!

EDIT: or are u being sarcastic?
