The torque engine generally is torqueDemo_Debug.exe, yes.
The console appears when you press the ~ key (without shift). It is in the very top-left corner of the US keyboard, directly below esc.

Good luck!

I hate to say this but expect to be completely confused probably for awhile, I have had the engine for a few months and I don't really know what I'm doing, the 3D game programming all in one, is a good book though. You probably will be extremely frustrated on a daily basis, I still get that way, quite a bit. I think the fact that the fps. demo project(if thats what you want to use), is very confusing, because of all the files, and folders, it's a wild goose chase to follow anything in there it seems. I'm not sure I love the torque engine to be honest, but I think in time I will be better off with it. There is a lot of things that torque does out of the gate, that to write, yourself would take a long time; besides nobody said making games was easy :) If I didn't have my hands in like 20 different things I would be more comfortable with it.

If your starting games programming/creation then I don't really think the torque engine is a great idea. Try something like Visual Basic 6 with Revolution3D(thats how I started) after like 2 years of jumping between engine, learning php and loving C++ I stumbled here around one year ago and I noticed the difference. Torque is compilicated at first but it will grow on you.
