I also have milkshape and find that easy to use as well and fairly straight forward but of course it is not free and you have to pay $25.

I have to agree that blender is a good program to use. I also have milkshape and find that easy to use as well and fairly straight forward but of course it is not free and you have to pay $25.

Maya does have a fully free Personal Learning Edition though I dont know if anyone has tested the exporter with it. Though it has all the features of the full version it puts watermarks on the renders. Good enough for learning-Crode

I believe that the PLE doesn't support most exporters. If you got the PLE with Unreal Tournament 2003, it included the UT2003 exporter made specifically for the PLE. But most won't work at all.

- a way to set skin weights for smooth bending joints
- easy face extrusion
- some method for easy subdividing of surfaces
- a way to average/smooth normals
- an export filter for the .dts format if your using torque
Is there a FREE 3D modelling program that has all of these?
Does Blender or Wings do all of this?

These are the minimum features you need to model anything good by today's standards:- a way to set skin weights for smooth bending joints
- easy face extrusion
- some method for easy subdividing of surfaces
- a way to average/smooth normals
- an export filter for the .dts format if your using torque
