T2 Server!

#1 Chris,

I just got T2 working on my PC. It's Sys.Req. are PIII(564 mhz), 190 RAM, Intel 810 chipset(onboard graphic controller).

I had to update the driver, but it seems to work even with low graphic specs.

I'd like to try out the network (LAN) version sometime next week.

I'm new at this, can you tell me if these games work with a dia up connection(56K)? Is there anything else I should know?

I'm really impressed with this Torque created engine, and want to see what the TGE can do by experimenting with T2.

Any comment from you or others is appreciated.

BTW, let's revive the enthusiasm for the series.

#2 I've never played it over dial up, but I don't see why it would be an issue. I know Tribes 1 worked fine over dialup and I think they tweaked the network code a bit more.

You're machine should be alright, though you may get bogged down with the graphics. While it might work with an integrated chipset, it's may end up being choppy and whatnot. I'm assuming from you saying you have 190 MB RAM that you actually have 256 and the video is sharing the memory, which won't help.

You should be able to make it work, but it might not run the best. Good luck with it. Worst case, there's some really awesome video cards in the sub-$100 market these days. Assuming you have an AGP slot and you have any spare money, it would be a great upgrade. Heck, I think Dell is offering some insane deals on P4 2 Ghz machines for like $400...

Yes, these days, it almost seem more practical to buy a new machine. :: )

Well, I'll see how this works out soon and decide to what to do from there. I check the Intel website and they gave a "thumbs up"(green light-no issues) for Tribes2 in regards to this particular chipset. This is curious since Sierra documents a required 12 MB dedicated. Unless, Intel has some technology that enhances the chip(don't know since I'm not a full-fledged techie).

BTW, I don't have 256 MB, but have 128 in in one slot and 64 in the other. I got the 190MB stat. from the "Direct X Diagnostic Tool" which incidently let me know that the chip also has an extra 4MB(not shared). That still doesn't meet the req'd. 12 though.

Can you tell me what would be a good test for checking the game? The training mode seems to be running smoothly enough, but I wonder if being on the internet will tax the system resources.

I'll post my results later this week when I try it out.

#10 You guys should play competitive T2 on a ladder, it tons of fun. TWL recently closed down its T2 ladder, but another one opened up at g-w-l.com. I play in the clan AFO, check it out at clanafo.com.

#12 I am! But need more practice. I'm as about as much a 'newbie' as one can get in this game genre. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get good enough to play? Or, how long does it take on the average to become somewhat competent? (I own T1 and T2.)

#13 I can't say with T2. I know with T1 it was strange. I _sucked_ for a month. I mean, I got stomped so bad that I was seriously thinking of stopping playing, then suddenly, out of nowhere I started kicking butt. Dunno. I would guess a few weeks of play you should be decent. Though remember that since these games are a bit older most folks still playing are hard core Tribers and are probably awesome.

#14 Yeah... if you jump on arena or duel servers any more 80% of the people playing will be complete badasses, so expect to get owned for quite some time. :)

Re: TWL, I don't think they closed down the ladder. I know I just got invited to a TWL Arena tribe last night. Maybe it's the CTF ladder they closed?

#15 Give my T2 mod RevMod2 a try if you'd like.. some servers are up and running.

T2, like T1 (and like Torque presumably) has really robust netcode, modems are fine.

I played a little bit tonight. Good games. I'll probably be playing for an hour or so a couple nights a week on arena or duel servers if anybody drops in. Be cool to see GGers in there.

#19 Dropped the PW req on the server so hopefull a few more folks will stop by. Haven't really have time to dig into any mods or anything yet. If anyone has any suggestions or requests I'd be happy to run anything :)

#20 I'm totally down for playing some T2 w/ fellow torquers, especially if its Renegades :) Its one of the few games I actually play!
