Call for Testers - New Game from 21-6: BuggOut

by Dave Myers · in General Game Discussion · 06/02/2004 (8:49 pm) · 10 replies

21-6 has been hard at work building a new game that we hope to launch very soon now - BuggOut. If you are interested in testing BuggOut over the next two weeks, please send an email to buggout@21-6.com.

Note: We only have a Windows build of BuggOut at this time, though we hope to have at least a Mac version in the not-too-distant future.

Thanks,
Dave

When the final version comes out later, will there be a Linux version?

Most likely not, Keith, though stranger things have happened in the past that we didn't think would happen (like Orbz for the arcade, for instance). If we do decide to put out a Mac or Linux version of Buggout, we would likely have someone do the port instead of developing it ourselves.

FYI - BuggOut is not written with Torque so a port to Linux is not trivial.

Thanks for the info... I guess I won't bother with testing it under Windows. I would have rebooted for the testing period if a Linux version would be out... but I haven't bought a Windows game for quite some time now. I suppose it's probably better off right now.... I need to get a third map out for the next map pack in Orbz. :-) I wish you guys all the best for BuggOut - it looks like it will be a nice puzzle game.

*EDIT*

Justin:

I remember seeing the snapshot of the day where you guys mentioned you had written your own 2D engine for the game... I wasn't sure if you had used SDL for the game API, but I guess from above that it wasn't used.

Seeing the beta for the new game you guys have reminded me of this one.... is it something still being worked on? Since you mentioned a while ago this isn't written in Torque, what was it done in (if you don't mind me asking)?

BuggOut is still "in the pipe" and will be released at some point this year (we are still planning that out).

We wrote our own 2D game engine with DirectX back in 2002 and have used it for a few of our games - including BuggOut. Unfortunately, it's Window's only right now.

We are discussing the possibility of using Torque 2D for BuggOut and our other puzzle game called Mark My Words. We then would get a Mac and Linux build out of it along with some other nice features like particles effects. The jury is out still on this however because it will cost some money to port the games over to T2D.

Thanks for the info. I can't wait for T2D, both as a programmer & a gamer. A game can be just as fun in 2D versus 3D. I'm sure the GG development community will come out with some great stuff when it's released.

I'm sorry, the testing for BuggOut has concluded. We will be starting up another testing round in late February and will be posting about in these forums.
