How to copyright your stuff is off the topic of this thread. Maybe we should get back to the question:
    Quote:
Does anyone think that using pictures of real wallpaper or tiles/flooring, etc. could have legal consequences down the road? Is this an issue that would be considered by a publisher?

My thought is that if (in the game) you can't be sure exactly what it is from then no one would bug you. Esp if you alter the digital picture to make it tile nice, adjust contrast, etc.

    Just my thoughts.

Why hasn't Jarrod brought his expert legal knowledge to this thread? The man has NEVER turned down an oppertunity to show us all how stupid we are, so what gives?

    Hello? J? You out there?

Gonzo, if you don't like Jarrod.. that is your business. Please don't use the forums as a platform to attack someone.

There are piles of royalty free stock images on the web. Some are free. We invested in several Marlin Studios CDs.

As a side note, the Marlin Studios license (and a lot of other texture packs) prevent their use unchanged in games. It is however perfectly valid to 'render' the texture in a pre-rendered 3D scene and use that.

Copyright law varies signifigantly between countries as well. I would put the chance being sued by a wallpaper manufactuer for a texture as very low. But if you become super sucessful, that may change. (but an interesting case if anything else)

There have been other conversations on GG regarding copyright, but if you want to be water tight, you're going to have to ask a lawyer.

Labrat, Show me the attack. If anything I was attacking myself.

@ Jeff: Nice to know some people get it.

On a related note, I was wondering if there were any issues with using stock textures and effects within Photoshop or PaintShop Pro. I wouldn't want to rely on those textures of course, but they sure can make things easier when blending images.

I know that Adobe and Jasc must realize people are purchasing those products for commercial use, but you never know to what extent they will allow it. Web use only? Hmmm... I have read the licenses and I didn't see anything limiting. Any input?

    Thanks,
    -Jeff
