TgeLobby v1.5 in Development

by Sean Pollock · in Torque Game Engine · 05/18/2004 (6:36 am) · 53 replies

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to tell everyone that I am now developing TgeLobby v1.5. One of the things I want to enhance for v1.5 is game filtering for the game browser. I am open for suggestions and also features you would like to see in the next version.

For those of you that have not downloaded TgeLobby v1.2 you can do so at Dark Raven Studios

Thank you

Hello Sean,

Does TgeLobby use its own messaging system or does it rely on something like irc. I saw this resource a while ago that is a client/server messaging system done in torque script.

I figured you might be interested in it.

It relies upon IRC, Ben.

As Stefan said, it does rely on irc. Thanks for the resource Ben. I think I saw that resource once before but had already been using the irc method.

I think you mean Sean; he wrote the resource. ;)

Nice work, Sean, incidentally. :)

Hmm, my post disappeared (not enough sleep, must have forgot the submit button).

Thanks for letting me know. I forgot to mention in the first post that this is a great resource and I am looking forward to the next release. :)

One thing that I would like to see is it use torque for everything. Torque has a great networking library and I think it would be more suited for a game library if it didn't rely on public irc server or having to setup your own.

@Ben Garney

Thanks Ben. It means alot to me that you think I did good.

@Ben Woodhead

I am pleased that you like it and also wanted to say that you make a good point about using Torque for everything. First, my plans are to make TgeLobby as good or maybe even better than the commercial lobbies out there such as Battle.net and the lobby that comes with Tribes 2.

After that, I will program a stand alone chat server and hopefully I won't have to change TgeLobby to work with the server. Shouldn't be that hard to mimic a irc server.

There is alot of stuff I want to impliment into TgeLobby such as connecting to an sql database for user verification, automatic update feature, buddy list, and the list goes on.

If you or anyone else has any ideas I would love to hear them.

Hello Sean,

Next week I am free to work on torque again, perhaps I can give you a hand. I need a lobby for the game I am working on so it would be good to talk. It would be nice not to have to duplicate each others work.

Hi Ben,

I think that would be a great Idea. I could use some help as there is alot that needs to be done to make TgeLobby as good as some of those commercial lobby systems.

Thanx,

Hello Sean,

There seems to be an issue with TgeLobby v1.2 (or perhpas it is with IRC). When I try to connect multiple computers from the same LAN to the lobby, only the first one will connect. Perhaps this is an issue with IRC and identd, but I would think there could be a work-around since you are writing your own client. This pretty much makes an otherwise awesome resource useless, since many people now-a-days work from LANs.

I sent you an e-mail about this about a week ago, but never heard anything in response. Perhaps you've already encountered this problem before? Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

@DANNY LEI: Our network handles this just fine, and we're running from TGE lobby. It's probably your IRC server that is at fault.

Hey Danny,

I am sorry that I haven't been very responsive but have been very busy with work and getting ready for a new baby in the house. Anyway, I did recieve your email. I have never encounted that problem you described before so I have no idea why it isn't working for you. There is nothing in TgeLobby that would care or even matter if you are connecting over a LAN and since Stefan said that his network handles it just fine it must be something on your end such as your IRC server or something else that you may have overlooked.

I wish I could be of more help to you but since I have never tested it over a network before I feel that I am not qualified to give you any good suggestions in this area. Maybe someone here like Stefan that has used it over a network can be of more help to you than I. I hope you get it working and please let me know what happens.

Hey Sean. I'm interested in your TGELobby addon. It is exactly what I need. I'd be more than willing to lend a hand. I'm an experienced software developer, but have little experience with torque, so it would be a good experience for me. I see that you are working on a SQL backend. That is great. Another thing I think that this would be great as, and I don't know if this is out of scope for your project, but something I would like to add, is an auto update feature, that once you join a game it will auto patch your system, so that you will have all the latest scripts. I haven't seen a resource for this, and I've done all kinds of searching for the topic, but came up with nothing. I find it surprising that no one has thought/tried this. Of course I could have just missed it. I will be adding this lobby to my game tonight, so I can give it a run through, and see what it is like. I'll studdy the scripts and get familiar with them, so that I can help you out.

@Steven,

Thanks Steven. I appreciate the comments and hope TgeLobby works well for you. I am planning on a autoupdate for tgelobby just not sure when I will get around to it.

Lately I haven't been working on TgeLobby because of some personal stuff and also am working on redoing my website. Hopefully my new website will be up in a few days.

Anyway, I welcome any help that you can give me.

I was beginning to think that you had disappeared. Glad to see you back. I'm in the process of moving right now, so I don't know how much I'll be coding over the next several weeks. There are some major stuff I've got to do around the house, before my wife says it is good. Mainly fencing off 4 acres for our horses. Anyway it will give me a much needed break from coding, and get my pastyness out in the sun to work back my tan that has faded over the last 10 years. Talk to you later. Oh I'll still check these forums, and your site forums while I'm at work, just not from home.

@Steven,

Yeah, sorry about disappearing but have been busy in redesigning my new site and because my wife is due to have our second child soon too. As soon as my new website is published I will be getting back to programming some new features into TgeLobby. Good luck with the house work and talk to you later.

Congratz on the child. We just had our second as well, a little girl. That is why we are moving. Need more space.

@Steven

Thanks for the congratz and conratz to you for your second child. My wife is now home with our second child (a boy) but have managed to get some work done on TgeLobby v1.5 which is coming along very well.

Some of the features I have implimented so far is a news reader that reads rss news feeds from the net and also am working on an autoupdate feature so that TgeLobby can be updated online which is cool. Not sure yet when v1.5 will be completed but will keep everyone informed as much as possible.

Sounds great. We have just completed our move, and should be selling our old home soon.

@Sean

Just wanted to see if you ever finished version 1.5. I know life has a way of getting in the way of TGE development. I have one daughter and currently waiting for a second child. Please let us know if you have any kind of update.

Thx!
