Biped - How can you change the length of bones?

Is there a way to customize the attributes of a biped skeleton? I want to make the shoulders and hips of a character im working on wider, but I cant figure it out. Im stuck with the slim little default biped skeleton.
no sir, im afraid that wont do.

That's what I thought of doing first BUT it turns out the bones are un-scalable. Anyone else?

1. Select a part on the biped.
2. Go to the Motion command panel.
3. Under the Biped rollout click the little stick figure button to go into Figure Mode.
You can now adjust the biped's proportions to match your character. Be sure to click the Figure Mode button again to return to normal working mode.
