Bum Fights!!!

by Derek Porter · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 05/10/2004 (12:53 am) · 11 replies

Screw censorship- I WANNA SEE A BUM FIGHTS GAME! It should have crazy druggies, starving hobos, and of course helpless bums. Weapons should include anything you can pick up(broken bottles, sporks, dogs, people, boxes, crates, bicycles- I want it all). The enviroments MUST be huge and completely destructable(right down to the very walls themselves), and it must be the single bloodiest game EVER!!! Now, if anyone has the means to do that, please tell- I'm dying to know.

I was beginning to write a big ol'rant here, realizing that it prolly doesn't matter.

A tought; maybe the game Zoe mention didn't do well because of its content...

It would be good if it was put in a more light hearted manner, it was more hobo/bum no druggies and it was old and freeware game... It was not bad bacause it was buggy but more of just the consept of lots of blood, and homeless people... I have seen a php game called "hobowars" (Or something like that.) though LoL, you never know! Maybe if it wasnt as bloody and had more action, and strat add'd to it.

Children under 15 have ready access to much worse content than I have ever seen on these forums... including this thread.

I must say that I believe the bumfight stuff is offal. Mental illness is as much a disability as any physical one. Most homeless people suffer from one or more serious disorders. Often they self medicate with alcohol or other drugs. These people are to be helped not coerced into inflicting bodily harm onto themselves and others.

You won't find a much more liberal soul than mine. Censorship doesn't figure into this... It's illegal for me to stomp on kittens, record it, and sell it. If you can't see the similarity, you need to spend more time around real people.

I think it's a horrid game idea. Based simply on the fact thats it's two principles are gore, gore, and more gore, and homeless people.
For one I do not find bums attractive in a way that I would want to play one. Maybe if the game focused on humor it would be different.

For example I find mercenaries to be interesting. Thus a game playing as a mercenary is attractive. Gore, and blood is just a sideshow anyway. After you've played the game once it's old.

Like SOFII the first time someones head explodes you think "Cool!" the second time it happens you don't even notice because your too worried about shooting the next guy.

I'l admit I had an idea for a "gory" game before. Yet it wasn't blowing people apart, or blood splattering from your uzi fire. It had more to do with traps, and such in an arena style environment much like the movie "Running Man".

Also it seems your looking for somebody to take your idea and make a game out of it. Which is never going to happen. What the game is about is maybe 10% of what counts. The other 90% is what the game has to offer as far as play quality.

I'd play Bert & Ernie's revenge of the lopsided triangles if it was fun, and challenging.

I'm still trying to imagine how long it would take a Hobo with a spork to destroy a wall. Maybe it's a Zen riddle...

I believe this entire idea would have stemmed from the "Bum Fights" movie, which was distributed over the net sometime ago. It was funny in a way that made we guilty, though it was still funny.

However, I don't believe it would be any good as a game. It was a subversive movie - doubt many people would decipher the subtle contexts of the movie beyond "it's cool watching bums fight each other" - but this is certainly no decent game to be made out of this concept.

Yeah it was a funny movie, but there was other stuff going in it which made it interesting a big middle finger to society in general, but that doesn't warrant a computer game.

Yeah, like all movie->game conversions it'll probably suck ;)
