FPS first?

Well, a few friends and I originally thought of using Torque to make an MMORPG type game. Being old time RPG types we're fed up with the current "level treadmill" schlock offered to us and figure we can at least make something we'd enjoy.
Now considering of the four of us, two are newbies to coding and the other two are just a bit past that I'm seeing that it may be a _huge_ undertaking to put in all the components that a decent MMORPG would need, certainly way beyond the grasp of a handfull of new guys.
Anyhow...I'm wondering if it would be better to just spend 3-6 months with the team and just build a decent FPS with Torque. Maybe get it up on GG and get a little bit of cash back to help offset our purchase of the SDK and use it as a learning experience.
What do you all think? Are people fed up with FPS knock offs? Is it worth the effort or should we just channel our energy into building the MMORPG from the ground up?
Thoughts, comments, flames? All are appreciated :)

Not really. One of the tutorials I read mentioned that it's best to work on your own for a bit till you can at least be useful to a team. Right now I'm sure I wouldn't help much :)

Think small. The smaller the better. Get your feet wet with small RPG or FPS. Don't expect to sell it though. Very few first games sell more than a token copy to a friend.

Hey man...Five "token copies" pays for my TGE :) Fine by me.

If you think you can pull off a game that will sell > 4 copies in 3 to 6 months I would run for that. Thats my advice. :)
