Book on Torque: "3D Game Programming All in One" by Ken Finney

3D Game Programming All in One, a book on game development using Torque, written by Ken Finney, and a part of the La Mothe game dev. series, is now available (GG Resource, @Yahoo (Ken get's a commission :), @Amazon, @Powell's, @BN, @GG directly soon).
I read this book for quite a while tonight. It is a phenomenal resource for beginning and intermediate Torque developers.
Whether you are a designer, programmer, or artist (and especially if you are all three), you will save yourself dozens of hours of study time and become productive more quickly with this book. If you value your time at more than 50 cents an hour, get this thing; it will save you much, much more than it costs.
Examples of subjects covered in detail: programming with TorqueScript, creating and exporting DTS shapes with Milkshape, creating and exporting DIF interiors with Quark, and editing missions, terrains and GUIs in Torque. References are provided covering TorqueScript functions, objects, and datablocks. Ken actually creates a game, step-by-step, in the book. The companion CD contains all source materials and relevant programs, as well as demos of ThinkTanks, Orbz, Chain Reaction, and MarbleBlast (which is basically free marketing for those teams... rock on, Ken).
The writing style is excellent: concise, complete, clear and entertaining. The book contains plenty of source and reference materials but is never dominated by them. I have thoroughly enjoyed going through it.
Ken also takes time to thank many, many members of the community here, including: Desmond Fletcher, Melv May, Harold Brown, Anthony Rosenbaum, Phil Carlisle, Dave Wyand, Matthew Fairfax, Pat Wilson, Ryan Parker, Simon Windmill, Kevin Ryan, Joe Maruschak, Joel Baxter, Justin Mette and 21-6, and Frank Bignone. That is awesome, you are all famous now. ;) We should all go return the favor and review Ken's book with honest opinions once we've perused it. I have no doubt everyone will be as impressed as I am.
Even if you aren't interested in Torque, this book is a great guide to modern 3D game development.
Congrats and thank you to Ken Finney (and Andre La Mothe and co.) for producing such an excellent resource.
Note: I started a new thread because the old one is quite long, and doesn't talk about this book until about 25 posts in (and doesn't mention that it's actually available now until even later). The book deserves direct attention.

Rob: yeah, I know what you mean. When the publisher sent me a copy of my own book for reprint review, I had to pay duty!!!. Not only that, when the courier showed at the door, the duty was COD. And he wouldn't make change... So I had to drive to the bloody convenience store to get change for a twenty.

If I would recommend one book to any beginner game developer, this would be it. If I was to recommend one book to any intermediate Torque user, this would be it.

I own a copy of this book. It is one of the two best books on game development I own, out of a couple dozen. It is worth EVERY SINGLE PENNY. I cannot recommend this highly enough. Experienced Torque experts will likely want this for reference and spare-time reading, but intermediate users will gain a ton from this, and beginners will save HUNDREDS of hours of trying to beat their head through the basics. If I would recommend one book to any beginner game developer, this would be it. I've already tried to convince everyone on our game team to pick one up and think you'd be silly not to get one :)

I'm going to go along with the group and say that as a beginner Torquie, this book has been a godsend. Clear, concise and exactly what you need to really get a handle on how to use Torque to it's full potential.I've already tried to convince everyone on our game team to pick one up and think you'd be silly not to get one :)

Amazon.co.uk usually ships books within a few days and makes it all so much easier. But they simply dont seem to have it in their inventory. Very weird.
I might have to bite the bullet and just wait for shipping and pay the price. *sigh*

The german Amazon has it for 46.30 euro - just search using the ISBN number and it pops up with 1-2 weeks delivery (isbn: 159200136X)
UK amazon still doesnt have it.
2 secs later:
It seems there are a few other european shops too.

I got mine for around $46USD using Amazon US. Will be delivered (I live in the Philippines) around June 4 to 17. Unfortunately for me, I have some consulting work in China for the next 6 weeks so I may have to ask my wife to ship it to me there which will definitely add more cost ... not to mention the nail biting while waiting for it to arrive. :(r/Alex

I ordered mine from B&N a couple of days ago (when I first saw this thread :)) and I hope to receive it in a couple of days. I hope more resources like this become available in the future.

If you head to borders in the UK and order it from there, they have a link where they can get the book from the states themselves - without you having to pay customs and stuff! You'll have to wait a few weeks, but hey....
Also, if you know someone in the US and get them to send it to you as a gift (make sure it's marked as such) then you wont get duty and tax on it....
then theres getting it on vacation or while someone else you know is on vacation....:-)
it's a great excuse to go to LA or somewhere similar!!

For the fellow UK people out there wanting to get this book, heres some quick advice that I've used to get hard to get texts and stuff from the US....If you head to borders in the UK and order it from there, they have a link where they can get the book from the states themselves - without you having to pay customs and stuff! If I order it from the states, then customs tacks on duty and makes the book more expensive than waiting.
patience I suppose
