TNL Seperate?

by Andrew "SuperDre" Jakobs · in Torque Game Engine · 04/21/2004 (3:29 am) · 9 replies

I thought the TGE had networksupport in it. then what's the difference between TGE network and the TNL?

My understanding:
TGE = Torque Game Engine
TnL = Transform And Lightning

but TNL can stand for a lot of things if you want to:
Torque Network Layer
The Next Level
The NeverLand

As a marketing guy I lobbied for TnA* and even had a button at GDC made up saying:
"Ask me how to put a little
TnA
Into your Game"

*TnA=Torque Network Architecture

(Original credit for this goes to Alex and Ben, but I have power over button creation). There are a few of these left and I believe it will be a collectors item someday - in the category of "When Marketing Guys try to be too Clever at tradeshows."

I have read that news article, but it still isn't clear to me if it's already part of the TGE, or do we have to buy it seperatly?

The TNL is basically Torque's network code, but reworked a bit. You dont need it if you own a Torque license, its mainly for other engines/projects that want the cool net code used in the Torque.

Andrew,

I can understand how it might be confusing.

To answer your question directly, if you have TGE, you have outstanding network support. Much of what is in TNL is in Torque. Torquers don't need TNL.

That's the answer. But it is not to say that TNL wouldn't have any additional value even if you own Torque. TNL does offer some new features, such as stronger security (even though Torque's standard network security features are good). And if you have, for example, a non-game project that needs network support, getting TNL might be a better solution than trying to isolate and use Torque's networking code yourself.

But Torque owners definitely do not need TNL for creating great networked games, because standard TGE features outstanding network support. (Not to toot our own horn or anything :)

I hope that helps clarify things.

Is it just me or can people just not read or are they extremely lazy or both.

this same question has been asked at least a hundred times and if people would just READ PAST THE FIRST 3 LINES they would not have to ask questions that show how lazy they are!

@jarrod Roberson:
As I said I read the new article, but it wasn't clear to me. And if you can point me to the hundred times it is asked in this forum which I have apparently missed then I'll propably smack myself on the head.. ;)

But you're right on the lazy part.. I'm lazy.. but not that lazy to first check other posts.. :)
